From TPA airport to Antigua

Reaching Tampa International

Uber/Lyft from downtown Tampa runs $18-28 and takes 25-30 minutes depending on traffic. HART (Hillsborough Area Regional Transit) bus 30X goes directly from downtown to TPA for $2.75, but expect 45-55 minutes with weekend service reduced. Your best bet is honestly the Uber/Lyft combo — split with a travel buddy and you're at $10-15 per person. Rental car agencies are on-site but parking at the airport itself runs $14-28/day depending on lot (see parking tips). Don't bother with taxis — they're $35+ flat rate and slower than rideshare.

Getting from ANU into Antigua

V.C. Bird International Airport is 5 miles northeast of St. John's. Taxis are the dominant option — official fixed rates are posted at the terminal exit. St. John's runs about EC$40 ($15 USD), English Harbour costs EC$100 ($37 USD), and Dickenson Bay is EC$35 ($13 USD); confirm the rate before getting in as meters don't exist. ABTA (Antigua and Barbuda Transport Authority) buses run from the airport area into St. John's for EC$2.25 ($0.85 USD) but require a short walk to the main road and don't run after 6pm — practical only for serious budget travelers. Most mid-range and luxury hotels offer pre-booked transfers at similar prices to taxis but with the comfort of a confirmed pickup; book through your hotel or use the Antigua Transfers app to arrange in advance.

Planning Tampa to Antigua

Antigua is the Caribbean island that actually delivers on the '365 beaches' marketing claim — one for every day of the year, or so locals insist. What it doesn't oversell is the quality: English Harbour and Dickenson Bay anchor a coastline of calm turquoise water, pink-tinged sand, and reefs that haven't been completely hammered. The sailing scene here is genuinely world-class, with Nelson's Dockyard functioning as a working marina and UNESCO World Heritage Site simultaneously. For Americans used to crowds at St. Thomas or Nassau, Antigua feels like a step up in prestige without the price spike of St. Barts.

Best-month weather in Antigua

January

7283°F · 5 rain days

Peak dry season with reliable trade winds keeping things comfortable. Sea conditions are excellent and visibility for snorkeling is at its best.

February

7283°F · 4 rain days

The driest month of the year with almost no rain and consistent easterly breezes. Absolute peak conditions for sailing and beach days.

The destination guide flags September and October and August as the least favorable months.

Two areas to consider

English Harbour & Falmouth Harbour

luxury

The epicenter of Antigua's sailing world and the most curated part of the island. Nelson's Dockyard (UNESCO site) anchors the area, flanked by Shirley Heights for sunset parties on Sundays and a cluster of serious restaurants — Cloggy's, Catherine's Café, and the Wardroom Bar are all within walking distance. Staying here puts you near the island's best nightlife but requires a taxi to reach the calm northern beaches.

Dickenson Bay

mid-range

A long stretch of white sand on the northwest coast that's Antigua's most tourist-accessible beach zone, lined with hotels from the mid-range Siboney Beach Club to the all-inclusive Sandals. Lashings Bar on the beach is where the local expat crowd mixes with tourists, and the snorkeling off the northern end near Runway 9 Bar is surprisingly good. Best base if your priority is walking to the beach every morning without a taxi.

Local planning tip

Rent a car for one full day rather than relying on taxis throughout your trip — local outfits like AVIS or Oakland Car Rentals charge around $60–70 USD/day and you can hit Half Moon Bay, Rendezvous Bay, Darkwood Beach, and Fig Tree Drive (where you buy homemade jams and local soursop from roadside stands) in one loop. The same taxi tour would cost $150+ and the car gives you the freedom to linger at Half Moon Bay when you realize it's one of the best beaches you've ever seen. Remember to drive on the left, petrol stations close by 7pm, and the road to Half Moon Bay is unpaved for the last mile — a standard sedan handles it fine.

Visa and entry notes for US travelers

US passport holders get a completely hassle-free entry — no visa required for stays up to 6 months. You'll fill out an immigration form on the plane, show proof of onward travel (your return ticket works), and confirm you have accommodation. Customs is straightforward; the standard duty-free alcohol allowance is 1.5 liters. Your passport must be valid for the duration of your stay (not the usual 6-months-beyond rule). There's a departure tax of approximately $28 USD, though this is now included in most airline tickets — verify when booking as older or budget fares occasionally still list it separately. No vaccinations are required but the CDC recommends Hepatitis A.
