From TPA airport to St. Maarten
Reaching Tampa International
Uber/Lyft from downtown Tampa runs $18-28 and takes 25-30 minutes depending on traffic. HART (Hillsborough Area Regional Transit) bus 30X goes directly from downtown to TPA for $2.75, but expect 45-55 minutes with weekend service reduced. Your best bet is honestly the Uber/Lyft combo — split with a travel buddy and you're at $10-15 per person. Rental car agencies are on-site but parking at the airport itself runs $14-28/day depending on lot (see parking tips). Don't bother with taxis — they're $35+ flat rate and slower than rideshare.
Getting from SXM into St. Maarten
The airport sits on the Dutch side, about 1.5 miles from Maho Beach and 4 miles from Philipsburg. Option 1: Taxi — fixed-rate government taxis queue outside arrivals; $8 to Maho, $20 to Philipsburg, $30 to Orient Bay on the French side. Rates are posted at the taxi stand — don't negotiate, just confirm the zone. Option 2: Rent a car at the airport — Avis, Budget, and local operators like Hertz Sint Maarten rent from $45/day; driving the whole island takes 90 minutes and is how you actually see both sides. Option 3: Private shuttle booked by your hotel — most resorts in Simpson Bay and Cupecoy include this, so check before paying for a taxi. There is no public bus service directly from the airport.
Planning Tampa to St. Maarten
St. Maarten is the world's smallest landmass divided between two countries — the Dutch Sint Maarten and the French Saint-Martin — and that split personality is precisely what makes it special. The Dutch side is where your plane lands, where the casinos stay open late, where Maho Beach puts jets 100 feet over your head as they screech onto the runway. The French side, Saint-Martin, is quieter, more European, with better food and clothing-optional beaches. You can cross the border without showing a passport, which means you effectively get two islands for the price of one flight.

Two areas to consider
Philipsburg (Dutch Capital)
mid-rangeThe commercial heart of the Dutch side, built on a narrow strip between a saltwater lagoon and Great Bay beach. Front Street is the duty-free shopping corridor where you'll find real deals on jewelry (Diamonds International, Colombian Emeralds) and liquor. The beach directly behind the shopping strip is surprisingly good — wide, calm water, and walkable to everything. Stay here if you want access to casinos and don't have a rental car.
Simpson Bay / Maho
mid-rangeThe activity hub of the Dutch side — this is where most mid-range hotels, the airport, and the famous Maho Beach plane-spotting zone are located. The Simpson Bay Lagoon is where charter boats and water sports operators are based. Nightlife is concentrated on the Airport Road strip with bars like Buccaneer Beach Bar and Sunset Beach Bar practically on the runway approach. It's not the most beautiful neighborhood but it's extremely convenient and well-priced.
Local planning tip
Book a car rental in advance from a local company like Lucky's Car Rental or Island Wheels rather than the airport chains — you'll pay $30-35/day instead of $55-65 and the cars are just as reliable. Then use the car to drive the perimeter road on the French side (Route du Littoral north of Marigot) on your last full day — you'll pass empty beaches like Friar's Bay and Petite Plage that 90% of resort tourists never see, all with free parking and no beach clubs charging for chairs.
Visa and entry notes for US travelers
US passport holders do not need a visa for either side of the island. On the Dutch Sint Maarten side, US citizens can stay up to 90 days under the Dutch Caribbean visa waiver — just a valid US passport required. On the French Saint-Martin side, it's technically French territory (an overseas collectivity) and part of the EU, meaning US citizens can stay up to 90 days in the Schengen Area total. In practice, there are zero border controls between the two sides and no one checks. Your passport is stamped upon arrival at SXM airport and that's the only formality. Make sure your passport is valid for at least 6 months beyond your departure date — airlines enforce this strictly.
