About Los Cabos
Los Cabos sits at the very tip of Baja California Sur, where the Pacific Ocean collides with the Sea of Cortez in a dramatic arc of desert cliffs and turquoise water. It's not one city — it's a 20-mile tourist corridor connecting the rowdy spring-break party zone of Cabo San Lucas to the quieter, more Mexican town of San José del Cabo, with a strip of resort hotels in between. Most Americans who haven't been picture Senor Frog's and tequila shots; that's accurate for Cabo San Lucas, but San José del Cabo has genuine colonial architecture, a walkable art district, and restaurants that would hold their own in Mexico City. The distinction matters enormously when booking — same airport, completely different experience.
For flights, Los Cabos is one of the most accessible Mexican beach destinations from the US. You can fly nonstop from over 40 American airports, and the flight from the West Coast is under three hours. That accessibility drives both its popularity and its prices — this is not budget Mexico. A decent hotel in the corridor runs $200-400/night, and resort day passes at the top properties go for $150-300. But the flip side is that Cabo rewards splurging: the whale watching (December through April) is world-class, the deep-sea fishing is some of the best on earth, and the Arch of Cabo San Lucas (El Arco) is genuinely one of the most dramatic natural landmarks in North America.
The Sea of Cortez side is calmer and better for swimming and snorkeling; the Pacific side has bigger waves and stronger currents — Medano Beach in Cabo San Lucas is the main safe swimming beach in town. Water sports are the main draw: whale watching tours run about $80-120 per person, snorkel trips to the famous Chileno Bay (a marine reserve) run $45-80, and sport fishing charters start at $250 for a half-day shared boat. The underwater life here is extraordinary — Jacques Cousteau called the Sea of Cortez 'the world's aquarium,' and he wasn't wrong.
The best-value play in Cabo is to stay in San José del Cabo, eat most meals in town at spots like La Lupita or Jazamango, and do day trips to Cabo San Lucas for the touristy stuff. Avoid booking an all-inclusive if you actually want to experience the food scene — the corridor resorts keep you captive and the town restaurants are significantly better. Flight prices to SJD fluctuate dramatically; the sweet spot for deals is May and early June before hurricane season kicks in, or early December before Christmas rates spike. Alert-worthy deals from major hubs drop to $250-350 roundtrip from the Midwest and East Coast when sales hit.

Airport to City: How to Get There
Option 1 — Private shuttle or taxi: Fixed-rate taxis from the SJD terminal to Cabo San Lucas run about $75-90 USD, to the Hotel Zone it's $55-70, and to San José del Cabo it's $30-40. Book at the official taxi counter inside the terminal to avoid scams — don't accept offers from people approaching you in the arrivals hall. Option 2 — Shared airport shuttle: Companies like Los Cabos Transfers and Best Day run shared vans for $25-35 per person to most hotels along the corridor; they drop multiple passengers so it adds 30-60 minutes. Option 3 — Rideshare (Uber): Uber operates at SJD and is significantly cheaper — expect $30-45 to Cabo San Lucas, $15-22 to San José del Cabo. Open the app in the arrivals hall (not the pickup zone) as some drivers wait nearby. Travel time is 45-60 minutes to Cabo San Lucas, 10-20 minutes to San José del Cabo.
Neighborhoods & Where to Stay
The party hub of Los Cabos — Marina Boulevard is lined with tourist bars, souvenir shops, and seafood restaurants. Medano Beach is the main safe swimming beach and gets crowded with vendors and water toys. Best for: first-timers who want the full Cabo experience, bachelor/bachelorette parties, and easy access to fishing charters at the marina.
The more authentic half of Los Cabos — a genuine colonial town with a pretty zócalo, a famous Thursday Art Walk (November through June, 5-9pm), and restaurants like Jazamango and El Merkado that locals actually eat at. Hotels here are cheaper than the corridor and you're walkable to real Mexican life. The estuary behind town is a birding hotspot worth the 20-minute walk.
The 20-mile stretch of highway between the two towns, dotted with mega-resorts including One&Only Palmilla, Las Ventanas al Paraíso, and Chileno Bay Resort. Beaches here are stunning but you'll need a car or taxi to get anywhere — the corridor has no real town infrastructure. Worth the splurge if you want full resort mode; Chileno Bay is a marine reserve and one of the few swimmable corridor beaches.
A gated hillside community perched above Cabo San Lucas marina with dramatic Pacific views — the Waldorf Astoria Los Cabos Pedregal is the anchor property here. Access is through a private tunnel carved into the rock. It's removed enough from the party scene to feel private but you're 5 minutes from the marina by boat or car.
For serious divers and eco-travelers, the East Cape north of San José offers Cabo Pulmo National Marine Park — one of the healthiest coral reefs in the Pacific. Basic guesthouses run $60-100/night, there are almost no tourists, and the diving is arguably better than anything near the main corridor. Requires a rental car and about 1.5 hours of dirt-road driving.
Daily Budget: What to Expect
$35 guesthouse or hostel dorm in San José del Cabo, $25 food (street tacos at Taquería Rossy $2-3 each, market lunch $8-10, grocery store dinner), $10 local buses or shared taxis between towns, $10 free beach and estuary access
$120-150 hotel in San José del Cabo or a budget corridor room, $60 food (breakfast at El Merkado ~$15, lunch at La Lupita ~$25, dinner with drinks ~$45), $20 Uber trips, $30-50 one activity (snorkel trip or fishing charter share)
$400-600 room at Las Ventanas al Paraíso, One&Only Palmilla, or Chileno Bay Resort, $100 food and drinks (resort breakfast, lunch at beach club, dinner at Manta or Cocina de Autor), $50 spa or activity, $50 private transfers
What to Eat in Los Cabos
Fish tacos at Taquería Rossy (San José del Cabo) — battered local fish, shredded cabbage, crema, and house salsa on handmade corn tortillas for about $2.50 each. This is what fish tacos were invented to be, and most tourists never find it.
Aguachile negro at La Lupita in San José del Cabo — raw shrimp cured in a blackened chile and citrus broth, served with tostadas and avocado. One of the best single dishes in Baja and it comes with a mezcal selection that's worth exploring.
Yellowfin tuna tostadas at El Merkado food hall — the tuna is pulled from the same boats you see in the marina, sliced the same day, and served with chipotle mayo and microgreens on a crispy tostada for about $8. The market also has great coffee from local roasters.
Lobster Puerto Nuevo-style at any of the beachside restaurants in Cabo San Lucas — split in half, grilled over charcoal, and served with beans, rice, and fresh tortillas. Market price but usually runs $35-60 for a whole lobster. Go at the marina restaurants during happy hour when some offer lobster deals.
Manta ceviche at Manta restaurant (Cape Hotel, Cabo San Lucas) — chef Diego Hernández elevates Baja coastal cuisine with smoked marlin, aguachile variations, and a raw bar that justifies the splurge at about $20-35 per dish. Sit at the bar at sunset and order the chef's selection.

Safety Tips
Los Cabos is significantly safer than most Mexican resort cities for tourists — it's one of the highest-security areas in the country due to its economic importance. That said: stick to tourist areas in Cabo San Lucas at night and don't wander into residential neighborhoods past the marina without local guidance. The main threats to tourists are not violent crime but rather beach safety (strong Pacific currents — swim only at Medano Beach in Cabo San Lucas or Chileno Bay in the corridor), aggressive time-share touts on the marina boardwalk (just say 'no gracias' firmly and keep walking — never get in a van for a 'free tour'), and overpriced taxi scams if you don't agree on price before getting in. At the airport, only use the official taxi stand or Uber. Don't buy drugs — the area is controlled by cartels and tourists caught in transactions are not protected by the perceived immunity of the resort bubble. Drink tap water only through your hotel's filtered water system; bottled water for everything else. The US Embassy emergency line is +1-800-681-9374.
Book your whale-watching or snorkel tours directly through the operators at the Cabo San Lucas marina (look for Cabo Expeditions or Cabo Adventures booths) rather than through your hotel's concierge — hotel-booked tours add a 30-40% commission markup for the exact same boat and experience. Also: the free municipal bus (Suburbano) runs the entire corridor between San José del Cabo and Cabo San Lucas for about 40 pesos ($2) — it runs frequently from 7am to 10pm and stops at all the major resort entrances. Using it for even 4-5 corridor trips saves you $50-80 in Uber fees per person over a week-long stay.

Starting in 2025-2026, Mexico requires all international arrivals to complete a digital entry form (similar to the old paper FMM) before arrival — most airlines push this through their check-in process, but check the INM (Instituto Nacional de Migración) website before flying. No vaccinations are officially required for entry from the US. Source: Wildly destination research; verify with the destination's official immigration authority before booking.
