Reaching Seattle-Tacoma International
Light Rail (best option): Sound Transit's Link Light Rail runs from downtown Seattle's Westlake Station to SEA in 41 minutes for $3.50 one-way (off-peak) or $5.00 (peak, weekdays 6-9am, 4-6pm). Trains run every 10-15 minutes 5am-midnight, every 20 minutes after. Much cheaper than a rideshare and no traffic stress. Rideshare (Uber/Lyft): $28-$42 from downtown Seattle (20-30 min depending on traffic), $18-$28 from Tacoma. Rental car with parking: Pick up from Enterprise/Hertz downtown, then park at SEA. Parking runs $16/day economy (further out) to $32/day valet. If you're renting a car anyway, this beats light rail plus a car rental at your destination.
Getting from LED into St. Petersburg
Pulkovo Airport (LED) is 17km south of the city center. Option 1: Marshrutka (minibus) Route K-39 runs from outside Arrivals to Moskovskaya Metro Station (Line 2, red) for about ₽60 (under $1); total city center journey 45-60 minutes, buy the metro ticket separately for ₽65. Option 2: Official taxi via Yandex Taxi app (download and load rubles before you need it) costs ₽600-900 ($7-10) to Nevsky Prospekt, 25-35 minutes depending on traffic — by far the most convenient option. Option 3: Aeroexpress bus (Route 39E) to Moskovskaya Metro for ₽50; runs every 15-20 minutes. Avoid unlicensed taxi touts inside the terminal — they charge 5-10x the going rate.
Planning Seattle to St. Petersburg
St. Petersburg is one of the most visually stunning cities ever built, a deliberate European dream conjured from a Baltic swamp by Peter the Great in 1703. The Hermitage alone — 3 million objects across the Winter Palace and five connected buildings — is reason enough to make the trip, and most visitors wildly underestimate it, booking one day when they need three. The canals, the pastel baroque facades, the 18th-century geometry of Nevsky Prospekt: this is a city designed to impress, and it still does. For Americans who've done Paris and Prague, St. Petersburg is the logical next escalation.

Admiralteysky / Palace Embankment
luxuryThe historic core surrounding the Winter Palace, the Admiralty, and St. Isaac's Cathedral — you are sleeping inside a UNESCO world heritage site when you stay here. The Four Seasons Lion Palace and Belmond Grand Hotel Europe are the marquee options, both on or just off Nevsky Prospekt. Walk anywhere significant from your front door; Hermitage queues start just around the corner.
Vasilievsky Island
mid-rangePeter the Great's intended city center, now a residential and academic district connected to the mainland by the Palace Bridge. Quieter than the tourist core but stacked with history: the Kunstkamera (Russia's first museum), the Stock Exchange building, and the Strelka viewpoint. Mid-range hotels and apartment rentals here run 30-40% cheaper than the embankment.
Local planning tip
Buy your Hermitage tickets online through the official Hermitage website (hermitagemuseum.org) at least 2 weeks ahead and choose the Dvortsovaya Naberezhnaya (Palace Embankment) entrance — not the main courtyard entrance where the tourist queues form. Time your visit for a weekday at 10am when it opens, skip straight to the 3rd floor Dutch/Flemish masters and Rembrandt collection while everyone else is still shuffling through the Egyptian section, then work backwards. Also: the Hermitage offers free admission to all visitors on the third Thursday of every month, but the crowds that day make it nearly unusable — go any other time and just pay the ₽500 foreigner admission fee.
Visa and entry notes for US travelers
US passport holders require a visa to enter Russia and the process has become significantly more complicated since 2022. The Russian e-Visa system has been partially suspended for Americans; check the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs website for current status as policies change frequently. If e-Visa is unavailable, you must apply for a standard tourist visa through a Russian consulate — there are none currently operating in the US (the San Francisco and Houston consulates closed; Washington DC operates at extremely limited capacity). Most Americans currently obtain visas through third-country Russian consulates (Serbia, UAE, Turkey are most commonly used) or via visa agencies. You will need an official hotel booking confirmation or tourist voucher from a licensed Russian travel agency as a support document. Processing takes 10-20 business days minimum. As of 2026, confirm all requirements directly with a Russian visa agency like Real Russia or CIBT, as the situation remains fluid and US-Russia diplomatic relations are at historic lows.
