From SEA airport to St. Thomas

Reaching Seattle-Tacoma International

Light Rail (best option): Sound Transit's Link Light Rail runs from downtown Seattle's Westlake Station to SEA in 41 minutes for $3.50 one-way (off-peak) or $5.00 (peak, weekdays 6-9am, 4-6pm). Trains run every 10-15 minutes 5am-midnight, every 20 minutes after. Much cheaper than a rideshare and no traffic stress. Rideshare (Uber/Lyft): $28-$42 from downtown Seattle (20-30 min depending on traffic), $18-$28 from Tacoma. Rental car with parking: Pick up from Enterprise/Hertz downtown, then park at SEA. Parking runs $16/day economy (further out) to $32/day valet. If you're renting a car anyway, this beats light rail plus a car rental at your destination.

Getting from STT into St. Thomas

Cyril E. King Airport (STT) sits just 3 miles west of Charlotte Amalie. Taxis are the standard option — fixed government-regulated rates run $9-$12 per person to most Charlotte Amalie hotels and $15-$22 to East End resort areas like Sapphire Beach or Red Hook. Shared safari taxis (open-air truck beds — a quintessential USVI experience) run $4-$7 per person to Charlotte Amalie if you're willing to share. Rental cars are available at the airport from all major companies; a car is highly recommended if you're staying more than 2-3 days since the island has no bus service worth relying on. Rideshare apps like Uber and Lyft do not operate on St. Thomas.

Planning Seattle to St. Thomas

St. Thomas is the easiest Caribbean getaway for Americans — no passport required, US dollars accepted everywhere, English spoken by all, and you still get turquoise water, white sand, and rum punch strong enough to make you forget your return flight. It's not the cheapest island, but the infrastructure is genuinely good: rental cars are plentiful, ferries to St. John run every 20-30 minutes, and Charlotte Amalie has a walkable duty-free shopping district that actually has deals on jewelry and liquor. Magens Bay consistently ranks among the world's best beaches and it earns that reputation every single time.

Best-month weather in St. Thomas

January

7284°F · 8 rain days

Peak season weather — sunny, dry, and cooled by steady trade winds. January is one of the best months to visit with low humidity and virtually no chance of a washout day.

February

7284°F · 7 rain days

Near-perfect beach conditions with the driest, breeziest weather of the year. Trade winds keep temperatures from feeling oppressive even in the midday sun.

The destination guide flags September and October as the least favorable months.

Two areas to consider

Charlotte Amalie

mid-range

The capital and main port is where cruise ships dock and the duty-free shopping action is. Main Street has genuinely good deals on jewelry, rum, and electronics — A.H. Riise and Cardow Jewelers are legit stops. Most hotels here are mid-range guesthouses and smaller properties; it's convenient but gets chaotic on days when three cruise ships dock simultaneously (check schedules at cruisetimetables.com before planning a beach day).

Frenchtown

mid-range

A 10-minute walk west of Charlotte Amalie, this small fishing village neighborhood has the best local restaurant scene on the island. Hook, Line & Sinker on the waterfront does excellent fresh fish, and Oceana Restaurant is legitimately upscale for a special dinner. The area has a laid-back local vibe that contrasts sharply with the cruise ship circus nearby — eat dinner here every night if you're staying in town.

Local planning tip

Book the 7am or 8am ferry from Red Hook to St. John ($9 each way, cash only) on a weekday and arrive at Trunk Bay before 9am — you'll have one of the world's most photographed beaches almost entirely to yourself for two hours before the day-trippers from St. Thomas and cruise passengers arrive. The underwater snorkel trail at Trunk Bay is clearly marked and takes about 45 minutes; visibility is best in morning light. Return ferry on a weekday around 3pm beats the evening rush. This full-day St. John trip costs under $30 in transport and park fees and consistently out-performs anything you can do on St. Thomas itself.

Visa and entry notes for US travelers

No visa, no passport, no customs required for US citizens — St. Thomas is a US territory. You can fly in and out on a driver's license (though TSA requires Real ID-compliant ID as of May 2025). No currency exchange needed. If you plan to take a day trip to the British Virgin Islands (Tortola, Virgin Gorda), you WILL need a valid US passport — the BVI is a separate country and immigration is enforced even on day charters.
