Very few other tourists means you'll have La Seu to yourself on a weekday morning — a genuinely moving experience in one of Europe's great Gothic buildings.

The vintage wooden train from Palma to Sóller (the Ferrocarril de Sóller, running since 1912) charges tourists €25 round-trip, but the regular TFSIB bus to Sóller costs €4 each way and takes the same 40 minutes — it runs multiple times daily and drops you right in the town center. Save the train for the experience if you want it, but don't feel obligated. More importantly: rent a car for at least one day and drive the MA-10 coastal road through the Tramuntana mountains from Valldemossa through Deià to Sóller. This drive is one of the best roads in Europe and it's completely free — just go slowly and leave early morning before the tourist buses clog the hairpin turns.
Where to Stay
The historic walled center of Palma is where you want to base yourself for a city-focused trip. Streets like Carrer de Sant Miquel and the Born promenade have excellent mid-range hotels in converted palaces — try Hotel Can Cera or Boutique Hotel Can Alomar. The neighborhood has the best restaurant concentration, is walkable to the cathedral and waterfront, and stays lively without being purely touristy.
Palma's coolest neighborhood for eating and drinking — the Mercat de Santa Catalina is the local food market and the streets around it are packed with independent restaurants, wine bars, and coffee shops that actually cater to residents. Hotel rates are slightly lower than Old Town. This is where you come for dinner at Bar España (the tortilla here is genuinely famous) or late-night vermouth at La Bodeguita.
The waterfront boulevard and adjacent Portixol village to the east are Palma's answer to a chic marina scene. Hotel Portixol is the original boutique hotel on the island and still excellent — Scandi-influenced design with direct sea views. Prices are 20–30% above Old Town equivalents but the morning walks along the harbor and the fish restaurants at Portixol are worth it if budget allows.
West of the old city, these hillside neighborhoods have the highest concentration of affordable Airbnb apartments and guesthouses, with local tapas bars and less tourist infrastructure. The views from Génova toward the bay are spectacular and underrated. A 15-minute walk or short bus ride gets you to the old town — good trade-off for a multi-day stay on a budget.
Not technically Palma but worth listing — this mountain village 30km northwest on the coast road is one of the most beautiful places in the Mediterranean. La Residencia (now a Belmond property) is one of the best hotels in Spain. Day-tripping from Palma is possible, but spending two nights here transforms the experience. The walk down to Cala Deià for a swim is obligatory.
Events & Festivals
Palma's patron saint festival in mid-January transforms the old town into one massive outdoor party across multiple plazas with free concerts, bonfires, and traditional Mallorcan music (xeremiers bagpipes). It's genuinely one of the best local festivals in Spain that tourists almost never know about — timing a January trip around January 19–20 is absolutely worth it.
Easter processions through Palma's old town are among the most visually striking in Spain — slow, candlelit, and genuinely moving rather than touristy. The Good Friday procession through the cathedral district is the main event. Palma fills up during Holy Week so book accommodation two months out.
The town of Sóller, 30km north of Palma accessible by the famous vintage wooden train, stages a theatrical battle reenactment in mid-May commemorating a 16th-century Moorish raid. It's chaotic, loud, and completely fun — locals pelt each other with confetti and the town parties all weekend. Easy day trip from Palma.
Palma's art scene throws open gallery and museum doors across the old town for one evening in late September, with free entry, street performances, and outdoor wine service. The event showcases Palma's genuinely impressive contemporary art world and is a great way to experience the city at night alongside locals rather than tourists.
Held in the inland town of Inca — 30 minutes from Palma by train — this centuries-old agricultural fair in mid-November is the biggest single-day market in the Balearics. Mallorcan cheese, sobrassada, leather goods (Inca is the island's leather-working center), and traditional food fill the streets. Absolutely worth the €2 train ride from Palma.
