About Palma de Mallorca
Palma de Mallorca is the kind of Mediterranean city that quietly outclasses every expectation. Americans tend to think of it as a European package-holiday destination — and it is, for British and German sun-seekers — but the old city center rivals Barcelona for architecture and food without anywhere near the crowds or pickpocket anxiety. The Gothic cathedral La Seu looming over the harbor, the narrow lanes of the Arab Quarter, and a genuinely thriving restaurant scene built around local pa amb oli (bread with olive oil) and fresh-caught fish make Palma a world-class city destination, not just a beach gateway.
The island of Mallorca itself is one of the most geographically diverse places in the Mediterranean. Within an hour's drive of Palma you've got the dramatic limestone Serra de Tramuntana mountains (UNESCO World Heritage), hidden coves with crystal-clear water like Cala Deià and Cala Llombards, and charming inland towns like Sóller and Pollença where the only tourists are people who actually did their research. Renting a car — which is easy and not expensive — unlocks a completely different island from the package-resort version in Playa de Palma.
For Americans, the flight logistics are the main barrier. There are no nonstops from the US, so you're connecting through Madrid, Barcelona, London, Frankfurt, or Paris. The connection adds a day of travel but also a reason to spend a night somewhere interesting. Once you land at PMI, the island is remarkably easy to navigate. Prices are lower than mainland Spanish cities for accommodations and food, especially outside July–August when the island gets absolutely overrun with Northern Europeans on cheap charters.
The sweet spot for visiting is May, early June, or September–October. The water is warm enough to swim, the crowds are manageable, the prices are 30–40% below peak summer rates, and every restaurant and beach club is open. July and August are genuinely chaotic — PMI becomes one of the busiest airports in Europe by passenger volume, traffic in Palma is gridlocked, and prices for anything near the water spike to obscene levels. If your schedule forces a summer visit, stay in the city itself or in the quieter northwest of the island near Deià and Valldemossa rather than the resort strip.

Airport to City: How to Get There
PMI airport is 8km east of central Palma. Bus Line 1 (EMT) runs every 15–20 minutes to Plaça d'Espanya for €5 — journey takes about 30 minutes and is entirely reliable. Taxis from the official rank outside arrivals cost €25–35 to central Palma depending on traffic; always use the metered official taxis, not touts inside the terminal. Uber and Cabify both operate in Mallorca and typically run €18–25 to the city center with the advantage of booking in advance — recommended if you're arriving peak summer and the taxi queue is 40 minutes long. Car rental counters are inside the terminal; if you're going directly to a resort area or planning to drive the island, picking up the car at the airport makes sense.
Neighborhoods & Where to Stay
The historic walled center of Palma is where you want to base yourself for a city-focused trip. Streets like Carrer de Sant Miquel and the Born promenade have excellent mid-range hotels in converted palaces — try Hotel Can Cera or Boutique Hotel Can Alomar. The neighborhood has the best restaurant concentration, is walkable to the cathedral and waterfront, and stays lively without being purely touristy.
Palma's coolest neighborhood for eating and drinking — the Mercat de Santa Catalina is the local food market and the streets around it are packed with independent restaurants, wine bars, and coffee shops that actually cater to residents. Hotel rates are slightly lower than Old Town. This is where you come for dinner at Bar España (the tortilla here is genuinely famous) or late-night vermouth at La Bodeguita.
The waterfront boulevard and adjacent Portixol village to the east are Palma's answer to a chic marina scene. Hotel Portixol is the original boutique hotel on the island and still excellent — Scandi-influenced design with direct sea views. Prices are 20–30% above Old Town equivalents but the morning walks along the harbor and the fish restaurants at Portixol are worth it if budget allows.
West of the old city, these hillside neighborhoods have the highest concentration of affordable Airbnb apartments and guesthouses, with local tapas bars and less tourist infrastructure. The views from Génova toward the bay are spectacular and underrated. A 15-minute walk or short bus ride gets you to the old town — good trade-off for a multi-day stay on a budget.
Not technically Palma but worth listing — this mountain village 30km northwest on the coast road is one of the most beautiful places in the Mediterranean. La Residencia (now a Belmond property) is one of the best hotels in Spain. Day-tripping from Palma is possible, but spending two nights here transforms the experience. The walk down to Cala Deià for a swim is obligatory.
Daily Budget: What to Expect
$20 hostel bed at Hostel Alma Palma or similar, $25 food (€3 coffee, €12 market lunch at Mercat de l'Olivar, €8 supermarket dinner), $8 public buses, $5 free beach access + €5 museum entry
$90 boutique hotel room in Old Town or Santa Catalina, $50 food (full sit-down lunch menu del día €15, dinner at a proper restaurant €30–35 with wine), $15 car rental day or taxis, $20 one activity like boat rental or winery visit
$220 hotel at Hotel Can Cera or Portixol, $100 food (beach club lunch €40, dinner at Marc Fosh or Adrián Quetglas €60+ with wine), $50 private driver or yacht charter share, $60 spa or premium experiences
What to Eat in Palma de Mallorca
Pa amb oli at any traditional bar in the old town — this is the Mallorcan staple: thick brown bread rubbed with tomato and olive oil, topped with local cheese, cured sobrassada sausage, or jamón. At Bar España in Santa Catalina you can eat one of the best versions in the city for under €5.
Ensaïmada at Forn des Teatre on Plaça Weyler — the spiral pastry dusted with powdered sugar is Mallorca's most iconic food product. The bakery on this square has been open since 1700 and the ensaïmada here is a legitimate pilgrimage. Get it plain or filled with pumpkin jam (cabell d'àngel) for breakfast.
Fresh grilled fish at Portixol village — the row of seafood restaurants along the Portixol marina serves the day's catch simply grilled with local olive oil and alioli. Expect to pay €20–30 per person for a full fish lunch. Go for the dorada (sea bream) or lubina (sea bass) rather than anything listed as 'imported.'
Tumbet at Celler Sa Premsa near Plaça d'Espanya — this is the Mallorcan ratatouille: layered aubergine, potato, and peppers in tomato sauce. Celler Sa Premsa is a no-frills traditional bodega that's been feeding locals since 1958. Lunch for two with a carafe of house wine runs about €35 total.
Frozen almond milk granita (horchata d'ametlla) from Heladería Ca'n Miquel on Carrer de la Llotja — not to be confused with the Valencian horchata, the Mallorcan version made from local almonds is served either as a drink or frozen granita. It's intensely nutty and pairs perfectly with the heat of July or September afternoons.

Safety Tips
Palma is a very safe city for tourists by any standard. The main threats are petty theft (pickpocketing) in the tourist-heavy areas around La Seu cathedral, the Born, and the port, especially in summer. Don't leave bags unattended at beach clubs or restaurant terraces. The beach strip at Playa de Palma (the S'Arenal area) gets rowdy with very young British and German package tourists late at night — if you're there after midnight there's a higher chance of witnessing alcohol-fueled incidents, though it's rarely directed at passing tourists. Driving on the island is safe but the mountain roads in the Tramuntana are genuinely narrow and have serious drops — drive slowly, pull over for approaching cars on blind corners, and don't attempt the Sa Calobra road in a large rental car if you're not confident. Watch for motorbike rental tourists on the mountain roads — many have no experience and cause accidents. Ocean swimming is safe at marked beaches; some coves have strong currents and no lifeguards, so check conditions before jumping in at unmarked spots.
The vintage wooden train from Palma to Sóller (the Ferrocarril de Sóller, running since 1912) charges tourists €25 round-trip, but the regular TFSIB bus to Sóller costs €4 each way and takes the same 40 minutes — it runs multiple times daily and drops you right in the town center. Save the train for the experience if you want it, but don't feel obligated. More importantly: rent a car for at least one day and drive the MA-10 coastal road through the Tramuntana mountains from Valldemossa through Deià to Sóller. This drive is one of the best roads in Europe and it's completely free — just go slowly and leave early morning before the tourist buses clog the hairpin turns.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best time to visit Palma de Mallorca?
May, June, September, October per Wildly destination research, based on weather and crowd levels rather than airfare. The months it rates worst are July, August.
Do US citizens need a visa to visit Palma de Mallorca?
US passport holders do not need a visa for Spain or any Schengen Area country for stays up to 90 days within a 180-day period. As of 2026, the EU's ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorization System) is expected to be operational — this is a pre-travel authorization similar to an ESTA, costing approximately €7, valid for 3 years, and applied for online before departure. It is not a visa. Ensure your US passport is valid for at least 3 months beyond your planned departure date from Spain. Spain is part of the Schengen Area, so your 90-day clock applies across all Schengen countries in a 180-day window, not just to Spain. Midwest: No nonstop; 12–15 hours total from Chicago or Dallas via European hub. West Coast: No nonstop; 14–17 hours total from LAX or SFO, typically routing via Madrid, London, or Frankfurt.
