The hotel strip on Nassau's north shore where Baha Mar's three casino-resort towers dominate the skyline. Staying here means access to world-class pools, a casino, and a beach that's nicer than anything near downtown. It's walkable along West Bay Street but you'll need a taxi or rideshare to reach anything beyond the resort complex — budget $15-20 each way to downtown.
Ground zero for cruise ship tourists and the cheapest accommodation options, mostly older guesthouses and a few budget hotels. Queen's Staircase, the British Colonial hotel, and Junkanoo Beach (free, local, underrated) are all walkable. No tourist infrastructure to speak of, but this is where you'll find roadside fish fry shacks with authentic conch salad for $10 instead of $25. Rent a car or use rideshare — there's no pedestrian tourist infrastructure here.
Events & Festivals
The biggest cultural event in the Bahamas happens on New Year's Day starting around 2am and running until dawn on Bay Street. Thousands of costumed dancers and musicians compete in a frenzy of sequins, crepe paper, cowbells, and goatskin drums — it's completely unlike anything else in the Caribbean. If you're going to be in Nassau for New Year's, position yourself on Bay Street between East Street and Parliament by 1:30am, and expect massive crowds, very limited taxis at 4am, and a once-in-a-lifetime party.
The second major Junkanoo parade happens December 26 (Boxing Day) with the same format as New Year's but considered the 'warm-up' — which is hilarious given how spectacular it is. Hotels spike in price for Christmas week partly because of this. The Boxing Day parade is less mobbed by tourists than New Year's and arguably a better experience for first-timers.
A prestigious series of deep-sea fishing tournaments running throughout June that draws serious sport fishing crews from across the US. Nassau Harbour becomes a spectacle of serious sport fishing boats, and the weigh-ins at the Nassau Yacht Club are free to watch. Even non-fishing travelers enjoy the atmosphere and the fact that excellent fresh fish shows up everywhere during tournament week.
A multi-day culinary event typically held at Baha Mar in early November featuring visiting chefs, local Bahamian cooking demonstrations, and rum and cocktail competitions. Ticket prices range from $75 for individual events to $250+ for VIP dinners. It's genuinely one of the best food events in the Caribbean and worth building a trip around — the 2025 edition sold out in August.
