Book the boat to Ilha Deserta (Deserted Island) directly at the waterfront kiosk in Faro's marina rather than through any hotel or tour operator — it's €12 round-trip and runs roughly every hour in summer. The island has zero cars, one restaurant, and 10km of empty Atlantic beach that looks like the Caribbean. One of the largest motorcycle rallies in Portugal descends on Faro for a long weekend in late July, drawing 50,000+ bikers from across Europe. Unless you're into it, avoid the waterfront area that weekend; if you are into motorcycles, it's a massive party and entry is free.
Faro's Carnival parade is small compared to Lisbon or Torres Vedras, but the street parties around Rua de Santo António are genuinely fun and completely non-touristy — mostly local families in elaborate homemade costumes. Timing depends on Easter, usually falling late February.
