The Nelson's Dockyard Museum is less crowded, beach vendors are less aggressive, and local restaurants are happy to chat rather than rushing you out. Early November can still have occasional heavy showers; late November is reliably good.

Rent a car for one full day rather than relying on taxis throughout your trip — local outfits like AVIS or Oakland Car Rentals charge around $60–70 USD/day and you can hit Half Moon Bay, Rendezvous Bay, Darkwood Beach, and Fig Tree Drive (where you buy homemade jams and local soursop from roadside stands) in one loop. The same taxi tour would cost $150+ and the car gives you the freedom to linger at Half Moon Bay when you realize it's one of the best beaches you've ever seen. Where to Stay
The epicenter of Antigua's sailing world and the most curated part of the island. Nelson's Dockyard (UNESCO site) anchors the area, flanked by Shirley Heights for sunset parties on Sundays and a cluster of serious restaurants — Cloggy's, Catherine's Café, and the Wardroom Bar are all within walking distance. Staying here puts you near the island's best nightlife but requires a taxi to reach the calm northern beaches.
A long stretch of white sand on the northwest coast that's Antigua's most tourist-accessible beach zone, lined with hotels from the mid-range Siboney Beach Club to the all-inclusive Sandals. Lashings Bar on the beach is where the local expat crowd mixes with tourists, and the snorkeling off the northern end near Runway 9 Bar is surprisingly good. Best base if your priority is walking to the beach every morning without a taxi.
The capital and only real city on the island, where cruise ships dock at Heritage Quay and actual Antiguans go about their lives. The Central Market on Valley Road sells the best local produce and prepared food at local prices — lunch for EC$20 ($7 USD) is genuinely possible here. Budget guesthouses on Newgate Street and around the Cathedral area run $60–90/night and put you near the bus terminal for EC$2 hops around the island.
A large marina complex on the west coast that operates almost as a self-contained community — grocery store, restaurants, dive shop, and a calm beach at Jolly Beach all within walking distance. Popular with long-stay visitors and yacht crews; villa rentals here are significantly cheaper than English Harbour equivalents. Less character than the south, but the Jolly Harbour Marina restaurant does a solid fish and chips and the sunsets off the west coast are legitimately spectacular.

Events & Festivals
One of the premier sailing regattas in the Western Hemisphere, held in late April/early May for five days of racing out of English Harbour. Even if you know nothing about sailing, the beach parties, rum tastings, and sheer spectacle of 200+ racing yachts on the water make this worth planning around. Hotels and guesthouses in the south book out 6+ months in advance; prices roughly double.
Running from late July through the first Tuesday of August, this is the real deal — not a sanitized tourist version but the event actual Antiguans dress for all year. J'ouvert at 4am Monday morning (paint, mud, and soca music in the streets) and the Monday/Tuesday Grand Parade with elaborate costumes are the centerpieces. Book a mas camp costume ($150–400 USD) through the Antigua Carnival Committee website months ahead if you want to participate in the parade.
Held the week before Sailing Week, this regatta focuses on wooden classic and vintage yachts — think 1930s schooners and restored 1960s racers sailing out of Nelson's Dockyard. The aesthetic is spectacular for photography and the parties are smaller and more relaxed than Sailing Week's full-throttle scene. Free to watch from Shirley Heights.
Not technically a festival but a weekly institution every Sunday from 4pm at Shirley Heights Lookout that functions as the island's de facto social event. Steel band plays until 6pm, then a reggae and soca DJ takes over until 10pm while locals and tourists share rum punch and watch the most photographed sunset in Antigua. Runs year-round but peaks January through April when the yachting crowd is in town.
