Weather & Crowds in December
Dry, warm, and festive — the entire diaspora descends on Accra for Christmas and New Year, making it vibrant but crowded and expensive. Book 4–6 months out.
Accra in December
Accra becomes a different city — hundreds of thousands of diaspora Ghanaians return home, the restaurant scene goes into overdrive, Afrofuture festival sells out, and Christmas/New Year parties run every night. The energy is unreal but so are the prices — hotel rates triple, restaurants are booked solid, and traffic is apocalyptic. Book accommodation in September or earlier if you're coming for December.
Events This Month
Rebranded as Afrofuture, this massive end-of-year music and arts festival in East Legon draws some of the biggest names in Afrobeats, Afropop, and international hip-hop — past headliners have included Burna Boy, Wizkid, and Cardi B. Held between Christmas and New Year's, it's the centerpiece of the December diaspora return season and sells out fast. Expect $50–150 ticket prices and a crowd that's half Ghanaian-American.

Quick Reference
Daily Budget in Accra
$8 guesthouse dorm or cheap guesthouse room in Osu, $12 food (2 chop bar meals + street snacks), $5 trotros and shared taxis all day, $15 entry fees and activities
$50 mid-range hotel in Osu or Labone, $40 food (breakfast at hotel + one restaurant dinner + street lunch), $15 Uber/Bolt for daily transport, $15 museums and activities
$150 Kempinski or Labadi Beach Hotel room, $80 fine dining at Buka or The Republic (cocktails included), $30 private driver for the day, $40 spa or premium experiences
Buy a local SIM card (MTN or Vodafone Ghana) immediately at the airport arrivals hall — it costs GHS 5 for the SIM and you can load a data bundle of 10GB for GHS 50 (~$3.50). This is the single move that unlocks everything: Bolt and Uber for safe, priced transport (saving you from taxi scams), Google Maps offline, and WhatsApp for communicating with guesthouse owners and local guides. Without local data you're dependent on hotel WiFi and vulnerable to price gouging on every taxi ride.
Where to Stay
The most tourist-friendly neighborhood in Accra, centered on Oxford Street — lined with restaurants, bars, craft shops, and ATMs. Busy, safe to walk at night by Accra standards, and home to most backpacker guesthouses and mid-range hotels. Stay here your first night to get your bearings before exploring deeper.
The expat and business traveler hub clustered around the airport — home to the Kempinski Gold Coast City, numerous serviced apartments, and the best Western-style supermarkets (Shoprite, MaxMart). Quieter and safer than Osu, but less character and you'll need a taxi everywhere. Best for those on corporate budgets or who want calm after a long flight.
Accra's wealthiest residential suburb where Ghana's elite, returning diaspora, and top-tier expats live — think gated compounds, fancy car dealerships, and Accra's best restaurant strip. Santoku, Buka Restaurant, and The Republic Bar & Grill are all here. Not budget-friendly but excellent for upscale dining even if you're sleeping elsewhere.
Accra's historic colonial fishing quarter — faded lighthouse, colorful fishing boats hauled onto the beach at dawn, and some of the most powerful street photography in West Africa. It's raw, authentic, and poor — not somewhere to wander alone at night, but unmissable during the day. Go with a local guide or join a walking tour through the Jamestown Café (GHS 100–150/person).
The quieter, more residential cousin of Osu — tree-lined streets, boutique guesthouses, good local chop bars, and a relaxed pace that feels more like the real Accra. Corner Coffee House and Santoku's original location are here. A smarter choice than Osu for a longer stay once you know the city.
Embassy district with broad avenues, the Accra International Conference Centre, and some of the city's best boutique hotels like Labadi Beach Hotel. Quieter than Osu, safer than Jamestown, and close to the beach. Many diaspora returnees book serviced apartments here for month-long stays.
