About Accra

Accra is West Africa's most accessible capital for American travelers — English-speaking, relatively stable, and historically significant as the heart of Ghana's democracy and Pan-African identity. The city punches above its weight culturally: you can spend a morning at the W.E.B. Du Bois Centre, absorb sobering history at the Cape Coast slave castles (a 3-hour drive west), then end your night at a rooftop bar in Osu watching Afrobeats DJs play to a crowd that includes Ghanaian diaspora flying home from Brooklyn and London. Accra has been quietly upgrading its infrastructure since the 'Year of Return' campaign in 2019, which drew hundreds of thousands of African Americans to reconnect with their roots, and the hospitality industry built around that wave is still in place and thriving.

Visa (US Citizens)
US passport holders must obtain a visa before arrival — Ghana does not offer visa on arrival for Americans as of 2026. Apply online through the Ghana Immigration Service e-Visa portal (ghanaimmigration.gov.gh) — a tourist e-Visa costs $100 for a single-entry 30-day stay and processing typically takes 3–5 business days. Expedited processing (48 hours) is available for an additional fee. You'll need a valid passport with 6+ months remaining, proof of onward travel, hotel booking or invitation letter, and yellow fever vaccination certificate (mandatory). Visas can be extended once in-country at the immigration office in Accra. Some travelers still use visa agencies for the application but the direct online portal is straightforward and saves the agency fee.

Airport to City: How to Get There

Kotoka International Airport (ACC) is just 8km from the center of Accra — a mercifully short ride. Option 1 (Recommended): Uber or Bolt app-based taxi runs GHS 80–130 (~$5–9) to Osu or Airport Residential Area and takes 20–40 minutes depending on traffic; always use apps over unmarked taxis to avoid price gouging. Option 2: Licensed airport taxis (metered yellow cabs) from the official queue outside arrivals charge GHS 150–200 (~$10–14) and are reliable if you don't have roaming data for apps. Option 3: Budget travelers can walk 5 minutes to the airport gate and take a shared trotro (minibus) for under GHS 5 (~$0.35), but this is uncomfortable with luggage and not recommended for first-time visitors — save trotros for getting around once you're oriented.

Neighborhoods & Where to Stay

Osu
mid-range

The most tourist-friendly neighborhood in Accra, centered on Oxford Street — lined with restaurants, bars, craft shops, and ATMs. Busy, safe to walk at night by Accra standards, and home to most backpacker guesthouses and mid-range hotels. Stay here your first night to get your bearings before exploring deeper.

Airport Residential Area
luxury

The expat and business traveler hub clustered around the airport — home to the Kempinski Gold Coast City, numerous serviced apartments, and the best Western-style supermarkets (Shoprite, MaxMart). Quieter and safer than Osu, but less character and you'll need a taxi everywhere. Best for those on corporate budgets or who want calm after a long flight.

East Legon
luxury

Accra's wealthiest residential suburb where Ghana's elite, returning diaspora, and top-tier expats live — think gated compounds, fancy car dealerships, and Accra's best restaurant strip. Santoku, Buka Restaurant, and The Republic Bar & Grill are all here. Not budget-friendly but excellent for upscale dining even if you're sleeping elsewhere.

Jamestown
budget

Accra's historic colonial fishing quarter — faded lighthouse, colorful fishing boats hauled onto the beach at dawn, and some of the most powerful street photography in West Africa. It's raw, authentic, and poor — not somewhere to wander alone at night, but unmissable during the day. Go with a local guide or join a walking tour through the Jamestown Café (GHS 100–150/person).

Labone
mid-range

The quieter, more residential cousin of Osu — tree-lined streets, boutique guesthouses, good local chop bars, and a relaxed pace that feels more like the real Accra. Corner Coffee House and Santoku's original location are here. A smarter choice than Osu for a longer stay once you know the city.

Cantonments
luxury

Embassy district with broad avenues, the Accra International Conference Centre, and some of the city's best boutique hotels like Labadi Beach Hotel. Quieter than Osu, safer than Jamestown, and close to the beach. Many diaspora returnees book serviced apartments here for month-long stays.

Daily Budget: What to Expect

Budget
$40/day

$8 guesthouse dorm or cheap guesthouse room in Osu, $12 food (2 chop bar meals + street snacks), $5 trotros and shared taxis all day, $15 entry fees and activities

Mid-Range
$120/day

$50 mid-range hotel in Osu or Labone, $40 food (breakfast at hotel + one restaurant dinner + street lunch), $15 Uber/Bolt for daily transport, $15 museums and activities

Luxury
$300/day

$150 Kempinski or Labadi Beach Hotel room, $80 fine dining at Buka or The Republic (cocktails included), $30 private driver for the day, $40 spa or premium experiences

What to Eat in Accra

1

Jollof rice at a local chop bar (not a hotel) — Ghana's version uses long-grain rice, smoked fish stock, and a deeper tomato base than Nigerian jollof, served with fried chicken and kelewele. A full plate runs GHS 30–50 (~$2–3). Any chop bar with a line of locals is a good sign.

2

Kelewele from a street vendor in Osu at night — ripe plantains cubed and fried in a batter of ginger, cayenne, and cloves, served in a newspaper cone for GHS 5–10. Addictively spiced and best eaten standing on Oxford Street around 9pm.

3

Grilled tilapia at Labadi Beach — whole tilapia marinated in pepper and grilled over charcoal, served with banku (fermented corn and cassava dough) and fresh tomato-pepper sauce. The beach vendors charge GHS 60–100 for a whole fish. This is the quintessential Accra experience.

4

Red red (black-eyed pea stew) with fried plantains — a West African soul food dish that's vegetarian-friendly and deeply flavorful, made with palm oil and fermented locust beans. Get it at any traditional chop bar for under GHS 25. Auntie Muni's in Osu is a reliable pick.

5

Waakye (rice and beans cooked with dried sorghum leaves) from a waakye seller before 10am — this is a breakfast institution that runs out by mid-morning. The leaves turn everything purple-brown and impart an earthy, slightly smoky flavor. Topped with spaghetti, fried fish, boiled egg, and shito (black pepper sauce), it's one of the most complex street meals in Africa for under GHS 20.

Safety Tips

Accra is one of West Africa's safer capitals but petty theft and scams targeting tourists are real. Never flash expensive cameras, jewelry, or your phone in crowded markets like Makola — use a cheap phone for navigation or download offline maps on a budget device. Taxis without apps: always agree on a price before getting in, or you'll be quoted 3–5x the fair rate. The 'friend' who approaches you at the airport or in Osu offering tours, currency exchange, or to 'show you the real Ghana' is almost always running a scam — politely decline and move on. Water: drink only bottled or sachet water (the blue sachets are everywhere and cost GHS 1) — stomach issues from tap water are common. Avoid Jamestown and Agbogbloshie (the e-waste market) after dark. Emergency number is 191 (Ghana Police). Travel health: malaria is a real risk in Accra — start antimalarials before departure and bring DEET-based repellent. Yellow fever vaccination certificate is required for entry.

Insider Tip

Buy a local SIM card (MTN or Vodafone Ghana) immediately at the airport arrivals hall — it costs GHS 5 for the SIM and you can load a data bundle of 10GB for GHS 50 (~$3.50). This is the single move that unlocks everything: Bolt and Uber for safe, priced transport (saving you from taxi scams), Google Maps offline, and WhatsApp for communicating with guesthouse owners and local guides. Without local data you're dependent on hotel WiFi and vulnerable to price gouging on every taxi ride.
