Austin Transit (MetroRapid Line 803) launched in 2023 and costs $2.50 one-way, taking about 35 minutes from downtown — it's genuinely reliable if you're not luggage-heavy. Rental car pickup at the airport has no upcharge; most agencies have 5-minute shuttle rides from baggage claim. Paid parking at the airport is $18/day in the main garage (overpriced) or use SpotHero for nearby lots at $8-12/day.
Getting from CMB into Colombo
Bandaranaike International (CMB) is 22 miles north of central Colombo in Katunayake — plan 45-90 minutes depending on traffic. Option 1: Airport Express Train (best value) — the direct train to Colombo Fort station takes about 40 minutes and costs around Rs 200 ($0.65 USD) in second class; runs roughly every 30-60 minutes but check schedules as they can be irregular. Option 2: Pre-booked taxi via PickMe or Uber — expect Rs 3,000-4,500 ($10-15 USD) to Colombo 3/7 neighborhoods; always pre-book rather than grab an airport tout who will quote you triple. Option 3: Airport shuttle buses exist but routes are slow and confusing for first-timers — skip them on arrival.
Planning Austin to Colombo
Colombo is the kind of city that sneaks up on you. Most travelers treat it as a layover hub before heading to Galle, Kandy, or the Hill Country — and they're missing out. The capital is a legitimately compelling destination on its own: a chaotic, colonial-layered port city where Dutch-era buildings share blocks with glass towers, Buddhist temples crowd next to mosques, and the best kottu roti you'll ever eat costs less than two bucks. It's not polished or Instagram-ready in the conventional sense, but it has an energy that more manicured Southeast Asian capitals have lost.

Colombo 7 – Cinnamon Gardens
luxuryThe most livable and beautiful part of Colombo — wide tree-lined streets, the Viharamahadevi Park, the National Museum, and a concentration of the city's best restaurants. The Galle Face Hotel and Cinnamon Grand are both nearby. This is where you want to base yourself for a comfortable, walkable experience with good restaurant access.
Colombo 3 – Kollupitiya
mid-rangeThe practical sweet spot for most travelers — busy but navigable, with the best mix of restaurants, cafes, and mid-range hotels. Barefoot Gallery, the Dutch Hospital Shopping Precinct, and the seafront Galle Face Green are all within walking distance. Most of the city's best new restaurants cluster along Galle Road through here.
Local planning tip
Book your Ministry of Crab reservation the moment you purchase your flights — not a week before, but the same day. Tables during Jan-March fill 2-3 weeks out. More importantly: download the PickMe app before you land rather than relying on Uber. PickMe is the local dominant ride-share, has more drivers, and is 20-30% cheaper than Uber in Colombo. Fund it with a foreign card via the app — your first few rides will be significantly cheaper than any tuk-tuk negotiation at the airport.
Visa and entry notes for US travelers
US passport holders require a visa for Sri Lanka. The Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) is the standard route — apply online at eta.gov.lk before departure. Cost is $50 USD for a 30-day double-entry tourist visa as of 2025-2026. Processing is usually instant or within 24 hours. Extensions to 90 days total are possible through the Department of Immigration in Colombo (Sri Sugathadasa Mawatha) for an additional fee. Do NOT use third-party visa websites — they charge double and just apply through the same government portal. The ETA is required before boarding; airlines will check it. Your passport must have at least 6 months validity.
