From AUS airport to Mumbai

Reaching Austin-Bergstrom International

Rideshare (Uber/Lyft) from downtown Austin runs $18-28 depending on surge pricing — average 20 minutes via I-35. Skip peak hours (7-9am, 4-6pm). Austin Transit (MetroRapid Line 803) launched in 2023 and costs $2.50 one-way, taking about 35 minutes from downtown — it's genuinely reliable if you're not luggage-heavy. Rental car pickup at the airport has no upcharge; most agencies have 5-minute shuttle rides from baggage claim. Paid parking at the airport is $18/day in the main garage (overpriced) or use SpotHero for nearby lots at $8-12/day.

Getting from BOM into Mumbai

The best option for most travelers is the prepaid taxi from Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (BOM): fixed-rate booths inside arrivals set the price before you leave — expect ₹600-900 (~$7-11) to South Mumbai (Colaba/Fort) and ₹350-500 (~$4-6) to Bandra. The AC taxi takes 30-60 minutes to Bandra, 60-90 minutes to South Mumbai depending on traffic. Uber and Ola are equally reliable and similarly priced — use the airport pickup zones marked in each app. The Mumbai Metro Line 9 (Dahisar East connection) opened in 2024 and connects near the airport to the western suburbs, but requires a local train transfer and is not practical with heavy luggage; stick to taxis for your first visit.

Planning Austin to Mumbai

Mumbai is India's financial capital and its most relentlessly urban city — 22 million people crammed onto a narrow peninsula where colonial-era Gothic buildings stand next to glass towers and some of the world's largest informal settlements. For Americans used to cities that close at midnight, Mumbai's 24-hour energy is genuinely shocking in the best way. The city never stops: fish markets open at 3am, dabbawalas deliver 200,000 home-cooked lunches by train every weekday, and Bollywood shoots on location at all hours. This is not a slow-travel destination. It rewards people who lean in.

Best-month weather in Mumbai

November

7293°F · 1 rain days

Excellent — warm days, cool evenings, very little rain. Tourist season officially kicks off and Diwali often falls here, making this one of the most atmospheric months to visit.

December

6588°F · 0 rain days

Peak season begins in earnest — perfect weather, zero rain, and the city decorated for Christmas and New Year. Prices are highest of the year and hotels book up weeks in advance.

The destination guide flags June and July and August as the least favorable months.

Two areas to consider

Colaba

mid-range

The classic tourist base in South Mumbai — home to the Gateway of India, Leopold Cafe, and the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel. Colaba Causeway is one of Mumbai's best streets for cheap clothes, silver jewelry, and street food. Stay at Hotel Suba Palace or Abode Mumbai for mid-range comfort without paying Taj rates.

Bandra West

mid-range

Mumbai's hippest neighborhood and the best base for first-time American visitors — it has the best restaurant and bar concentration, is walkable, and feels relatively calm compared to South Mumbai. Carter Road seafront, Hill Road shopping, and spots like The Bombay Canteen and SodaBottleOpenerWala are all within walking distance. The Taj Lands End is the luxury option here; mid-range travelers do well at Elco Arcade apartments or The Bar & Bed.

Local planning tip

Book your BOM-bound flight with a layover in Delhi and add a 2-3 day DEL stopover for free — Air India and several Gulf carriers allow this without extra airfare cost if you book it as a single itinerary. Delhi-Mumbai is a natural India circuit (Golden Triangle plus coastal city) and many travelers spend $2,000+ on separate flights for exactly this combination. Also: the Mumbai local train Day Pass (₹70 for unlimited travel on Western or Central line) is one of the world's great travel bargains — buy it at any suburban station counter and you can reach Bandra from CST in 20 minutes for the cost of a single US MetroCard swipe.

Visa and entry notes for US travelers

US passport holders require a visa before arrival — India does not offer visa-free entry to Americans. The e-Visa (eTV) is the right choice for tourism: apply at indianvisaonline.gov.in, costs $25 for 30 days or $40 for 1-year multiple entry. Processing takes 72 hours but often completes in 24 hours; apply at least a week before departure to be safe. The 1-year multiple-entry visa is strongly recommended if you think you might return or want flexibility — the price difference is minimal. Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your arrival date. Visa on Arrival is NOT available for US citizens despite what some older travel sites claim — you must have the e-Visa approved before boarding.
