How we know: Sources are listed at the end. Every fee, earn rate and bonus below is taken from the issuer's own card page as loaded on 2026-09-29. Card terms change without notice, so confirm on the issuer's page before you apply. Wildly does not track cardholder spending or bookings.
A travel card with no annual fee cannot lose you money, which makes it the right starting point for anyone who takes one or two international trips a year and does not want to justify a fee every January. What separates the good ones is how the points can be used (fixed-value travel credit versus transfers to airline programmes), whether there is a foreign transaction fee, and whether the bonus categories match how you already spend.

Sources for each row are in the card sections below.
Capital One VentureOne Rewards
Per Capital One's VentureOne page: $0 annual fee, unlimited 1.25 miles per dollar on every purchase, 5 miles per dollar on hotels, vacation rentals and rental cars booked through Capital One Travel, 20,000 bonus miles after $500 in purchases in the first three months, and no foreign transaction fee. Miles can be used to book through Capital One Travel or to erase past travel purchases.
The reason this card leads the list is transfers. Capital One's transfer partners guide (January 2026) names VentureOne among the cards whose miles move to roughly 17 airline and 4 hotel partners, most at 1:1, with a 1,000-mile minimum. That gives a no-fee card access to award sweet spots (see our points redemption guide) that fixed-value cards cannot reach.
Discover it Miles
Per Discover's card page: no annual fee, unlimited 1.5 miles per dollar, and Discover automatically matches all miles earned at the end of the first year, with no minimum or cap. Miles redeem at 100 miles = $1 as a statement credit against travel purchases or as cash to a bank account. There are no transfer partners. The first-year match makes this the strongest year-one return of the five for someone with modest spending; after year one it is a plain 1.5% card. Discover acceptance abroad is narrower than Visa or Mastercard, so carry a second card when travelling.
Bank of America Travel Rewards
Per Bank of America's card page: $0 annual fee, unlimited 1.5 points per dollar, 25,000 online bonus points (a $250 value) after $1,000 in purchases in the first 90 days, no foreign transaction fees, and points redeemed as a statement credit against flights, hotels, vacation rentals, baggage fees and restaurants. Points do not expire while the account is open. Bank of America's Preferred Rewards programme increases earning for customers with qualifying balances; the exact uplift depends on your tier, so check the programme page.
Wells Fargo Autograph
Per Wells Fargo's Autograph page: no annual fee, 3x points on restaurants, travel, gas and transit, popular streaming services and phone plans, 20,000 bonus points (a $200 value) after $1,000 in purchases in the first three months, and no foreign transaction fee. The page also lists up to $600 of cell phone protection against damage or theft with a $25 deductible (two claims per 12 months) when you pay your phone bill with the card, and the ability to transfer points to select travel loyalty programmes. This is the best category earner in the group for people whose spending is concentrated in dining, fuel and travel.
U.S. Bank Smartly Visa Signature
Per U.S. Bank's card page: $0 annual fee and unlimited 2% cash back on every purchase, rising to 2.5%, 3% or 4% total on the first $10,000 of eligible purchases per billing cycle for customers holding $10,000–$49,999, $50,000–$99,999 or $100,000+ in qualifying U.S. Bank balances with a Bank Smartly Savings account. It is a cash-back card rather than a travel card, with no travel-specific protections listed, but 2% on everything with no fee is a strong baseline for anyone who prefers cash to points. Check the foreign transaction fee before using it abroad; it is not stated on the card page.
Which one to pick
- You want flexibility and airline awards: VentureOne, because it is the only card here with a broad transfer-partner list at no fee.
- You spend heavily on dining, fuel and travel: Wells Fargo Autograph's 3x categories will outpace a flat 1.5x card.
- You are new to rewards or spend modestly: Discover it Miles, for the first-year match, then add a Visa or Mastercard for acceptance abroad.
- You bank with Bank of America or U.S. Bank: the relationship bonuses on their cards can make them the best flat-rate option.
Whichever you pick, the card earns in the background; the flight itself is where the money is. Set a price alert on the route you are saving for, such as JFK to Paris or LAX to Cancun, and Wildly will email you when the fare drops.
When a fee card is worth it
A card with an annual fee only makes sense when the extra earning or benefits you will actually use exceed the fee. The usual triggers are frequent international travel (lounge access, travel insurance, trip delay cover), high spending in bonus categories, and a desire for premium transfer partners. If you take one international trip and a couple of domestic ones a year, a pair of no-fee cards covering different categories is usually the better setup. FAQ
Can you transfer points from a no annual fee card to airlines? Yes, with Capital One VentureOne (17 airline and 4 hotel partners per Capital One's guide) and, to a shorter list, Wells Fargo Autograph. Discover, Bank of America Travel Rewards and U.S. Bank Smartly redeem as statement credit or cash only.
Do no annual fee travel cards charge foreign transaction fees? VentureOne, Bank of America Travel Rewards and Wells Fargo Autograph state no foreign transaction fee on their card pages. For Discover it Miles and U.S. Bank Smartly, confirm in the current terms before you travel.
Is a welcome bonus worth chasing on a no-fee card? The bonuses here are modest (20,000–25,000 points, worth about $200–$250 at the issuers' stated values) and the spend requirements are low ($500–$1,000), so yes, if the spending is money you would spend anyway.
Which card is best for someone with average credit? Issuers publish credit requirements loosely and change them; use each issuer's pre-qualification tool, which checks eligibility without a hard inquiry, rather than relying on score ranges quoted by third parties.
