How we know: Sources are listed at the end. The booking-window and day-of-week figures are quoted from Google's published analysis of Google Flights data; Wildly does not publish its own averages.
Spring break is a rolling peak. US colleges and school districts take their week off at different points from late February to mid-April, with the heaviest concentration in the middle two weeks of March, and the whole period shifts with Easter (Wikipedia: Spring break). For airlines that means five or six consecutive weeks of elevated leisure demand to a small set of warm destinations.
When to book
Google's analysis of Google Flights data puts the lowest prices for March and April trips at about 43 days before departure, with a low range of 28–61 days (Google holiday travel trends 2025). For a mid-March trip that is late January to early February. If your dates are locked to a school calendar, start watching in December or early January and book when you see a fare you would accept inside that window; the cheap buckets on peak beach routes do not reopen once the week is close.
Why Cancún costs what it costs
Cancún, Cabo, Punta Cana, Montego Bay and Nassau are the traditional spring-break destinations (Wikipedia: Spring break), and demand concentrates on Saturday departures and Saturday returns to match hotel weeks. Two things follow. First, the Saturday-to-Saturday pattern is the most expensive one; Google's data shows midweek departures about 13% cheaper than weekend ones across the year, and on beach routes the gap is often wider in March. Second, the many airlines competing on Chicago–Cancún or New York–Cancún keep fares in check compared with routes to smaller islands with one or two carriers. Check today's fare on Chicago to Cancún or JFK to Cancún.
Alternatives that usually price lower
- Costa Rica (San José, Liberia): rainforest and Pacific beaches, dry season in March, less spring-break demand than Mexico. See Miami to San José.
- Dominican Republic (Punta Cana, Santo Domingo): strong competition from the US East Coast keeps fares reasonable; see LAX to Punta Cana for a West Coast example.
- Colombia (Cartagena, Medellín): short flights from Miami and New York, not on the college circuit.
- Portugal, Spain and Morocco: shoulder season in Europe and North Africa, when transatlantic fares are among the year's lowest and the weather is mild.
- Go the week after. The first two weeks of April are cheaper than mid-March almost everywhere warm, unless Easter falls there.
Tactics that work
- Shift one leg off Saturday. Even a Sunday out or a Friday back changes the fare materially.
- Consider a connection. Google's data shows connecting itineraries about 22% cheaper on average than nonstops; for a four-hour beach flight the layover cost is bearable.
- Compare airports. Fort Lauderdale vs Miami, Newark vs JFK, Midway vs O'Hare. Low-cost carriers on the secondary airport often set the floor.
- Set a flexible-date alert in December at a realistic target and let it watch through the low window. Set a price alert; see how to pick a target.
- Book when it fires. Peak-week buckets do not come back.
The common mistake
Waiting for a last-minute deal on a peak-week Saturday. Late fares on those days are set for people who must travel; the only reliable late bargains are on the off-days and the off-weeks.
FAQ
How far in advance should I book spring break flights? About six weeks out is the published low point (43 days, range 28–61) for March and April travel. Start watching earlier if your dates are fixed.
What is the cheapest spring break destination? There is no fixed answer; it depends on your origin. Competitive routes to Cancún and Punta Cana are often cheaper than smaller islands, and Central America and Europe's shoulder season are cheaper still for many origins.
Is it cheaper to fly midweek during spring break? Yes; midweek departures have been about 13% cheaper than weekends in Google Flights' data, and beach routes exaggerate the pattern.
