Who this is for: US travelers deciding when to go to the Caribbean, or Cancun, who want the actual calendar behind high and low season rather than a guess.

How we know: Sources are listed at the end. There are no monthly fare averages in this guide because no source we could load publishes them for US to Caribbean routes and Wildly has no historical dataset. Wildly records daily prices on about 240 routes; route pages show observed ranges as they accumulate. The seasonal facts come from NOAA, two official tourism boards and published booking studies.

The cheapest month to fly to the Caribbean from the US is set by three calendars: the Atlantic hurricane season, the US school year, and the islands' own dry and wet seasons. Where those three are all quiet, demand is at its lowest, and the Cayman Islands' tourism office says as much about its own autumn: "airfare and hotel pricing are at their lowest". Where they are all busy, at Christmas and over spring break, fares are structurally high. This guide lays out the three calendars with sources, flags the islands that sit outside the hurricane belt, and shows how to check live fares for the window you pick.

Calendar 1: hurricane season

NOAA's National Hurricane Center: "The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30", with a climatological peak on September 10 and "most activity occurring between mid-August and mid-October". Over 1991 to 2020 an average season produced "14 named storms, 7 hurricanes, and 3 major hurricanes" (NOAA NHC).

Two things follow. First, the risk is not spread evenly across the six months: June and July are early season, late August through early October is the core, November tails off. Second, the risk is not spread evenly across the map. Aruba's tourism authority states that "Aruba is outside the Caribbean hurricane belt, located much farther south", that its season dates nominally run "from June 1st to November 30th", and that "in general, the weather conditions in Aruba remain the same, despite hurricanes or tropical storms passing in the Caribbean region" (Aruba Tourism Authority). The southern islands (Aruba, Bonaire, Curacao) are the standard choice for a September trip for exactly that reason.

Calendar 2: the islands' own seasons

The Cayman Islands Department of Tourism describes a year that generalises reasonably well to the northern and western Caribbean (Cayman Islands DoT):

  • December to March: cooler and less humid, "particularly in the month of March, which is also the least humid month".
  • April through June: "popular times to visit the Cayman Islands, partially due to the fantastic Cayman weather".
  • July through September: the hottest months, with rainfall in August and September "somewhat similar to June".
  • October through November: "the Caribbean experiences above-average rainfall", and, in the department's words, "airfare and hotel pricing are at their lowest, making it an ideal time to visit".

That last sentence is a tourism board describing its own low season. It is the closest thing to an official statement on Caribbean fare seasonality that we could load.

Calendar 3: the US school year and Easter

US demand for the Caribbean is winter-sun demand plus school-holiday demand. US summer break "lasts for about 11-16 weeks, starting anywhere from the Friday before Memorial Day to late June, and ending anywhere from August to the day after Labor Day in early September" (Wikipedia: School holiday). Spring break clusters in March and April, and Easter moves: 5 April in 2026, 28 March in 2027, 16 April in 2028, and it can fall anywhere from 22 March to 25 April (Wikipedia: List of dates for Easter). Presidents' Day weekend in February and the Christmas to New Year block complete the picture.

The combined calendar

| Month | Weather | Hurricane risk | US demand | Overall pressure | |---|---|---|---|---| | January | Dry, cool | None | High after New Year week, then steady | High | | February | Dry, cool | None | Presidents' Day, winter escapes | High | | March | Driest, least humid | None | Spring break | High | | April | Dry, warm | None | Spring break, Easter some years | High to moderate | | May | Warming, some rain | Season not yet open | Quiet until Memorial Day | Low to moderate | | June | Hot, wet in places | Early season | Summer break begins | Moderate | | July | Hot | Early season | Summer break | Moderate | | August | Hot, wet | Core season begins mid-month | Summer break | Moderate | | September | Hot, wet | Peak (10 September) | Back to school | Low | | October | Wet | Core season to mid-month | Quiet | Low | | November | Wet, cooling | Tailing off | Thanksgiving week | Low, except Thanksgiving | | December | Dry begins | Season closes 30 November | Christmas week | Low early, very high late |

The "overall pressure" column is a reading of the three calendars, not a fare measurement. It matches the Cayman department's own statement that October and November are the bottom.

What the booking studies add

Google's analysis of round-trip fares from 2021 to 2025 found Mexico and Caribbean fares lowest "50 days before departure (26-79 days is the low price range)" (Google blog). Hopper's 2025 guide says travel to the Caribbean and Mexico is cheapest if you "depart on a Tuesday or Wednesday instead of on Friday or over the weekend" (Hopper). Neither study ranks Caribbean months; the calendar above is what fills that gap. For the study comparison see how far in advance to book international flights.

Choosing a window

  • Lowest demand, highest weather risk: September and October. Go south of the belt (Aruba, Bonaire, Curacao) or accept the risk and buy a changeable fare.
  • Low demand, moderate risk: late April after Easter through early June, and November outside Thanksgiving week.
  • High demand, no weather risk: January to March. Fares are structurally high; the play is to book inside Google's window and set a target rather than hope for a sale.
  • Avoid unless fixed: the week between Christmas and New Year, and the Saturday-to-Saturday spring break weeks.

How to check real fares for your window

  1. Open a destination hub: Cancun, Montego Bay, Punta Cana, Grand Cayman, Aruba or San Juan. Each lists US origins with observed fares from the latest daily check.
  2. Open your route page, for example Miami to Montego Bay, Chicago to Cancun or Boston to Aruba. It shows the lowest economy fare in the most recent check with its date, and, once enough days have accumulated, typical, good and great bands. How those checks are made is described on /methodology.
  3. Set a Wildly alert at a target at or below the route's good band, with plus or minus 3 days if your dates can move (midweek departures are the cheap ones, per Hopper). Turn on Google Flights tracking for the same search as a second signal. The free plan covers one trip; see /pricing.

When the alert fires, run the four checks in Is this a good flight price? before buying; Caribbean economy fares frequently exclude checked bags, which changes the total.

FAQ

What is the cheapest month to fly to the Caribbean? No study we could load ranks the months by fare. The Cayman Islands tourism office says airfare and hotel pricing are at their lowest in October and November, and the three calendars above point to September through early December (outside Thanksgiving week) as the low-demand window.

Is it safe to book during hurricane season? NOAA's season runs 1 June to 30 November with the peak on 10 September. Risk is concentrated from mid-August to mid-October and is lowest in the southern islands. Aruba's tourism authority states the island is outside the hurricane belt. Buy a changeable fare and consider travel insurance if you go in the core weeks.

Is Cancun priced like the Caribbean? Google's study groups Mexico and the Caribbean together (low point 50 days out). Cancun shares the hurricane season and the US school calendar, so the same windows apply; check the Cancun hub for observed fares.

Does flying midweek matter? Hopper's 2025 guide says departing Tuesday or Wednesday is cheapest for the Caribbean and Mexico. A plus or minus 3 day alert window catches those days automatically.
