Who this is for: US travelers choosing when to go to Japan, who want to know which months are structurally expensive and which are quiet, before looking at a single fare.

How we know: Sources are listed at the end. This guide contains no fare averages by month, because no published source we could load provides them for US to Japan and Wildly has no historical dataset to draw them from. Wildly records daily prices on about 240 routes; route pages show observed ranges as they accumulate. The seasonal facts below come from a Japan travel reference, Wikipedia holiday entries, the Japan Meteorological Agency and published booking studies.

The cheapest month to fly to Japan from the US is not a fixed answer, but the expensive months are predictable, and that is most of the battle. Japan has three domestic travel peaks (New Year, Golden Week in late April and early May, and Obon in mid-August) plus a foreign-visitor peak around the cherry blossoms in late March and early April. The US adds its own peaks: summer break, Thanksgiving and the winter holidays. The months when neither calendar is busy are where the low fares tend to live. Here is the calendar, with sources, and how to turn it into a booking plan.

Japan's demand calendar

Late March to mid-April: cherry blossom. japan-guide notes that "towards the end of March the cherry blossom season starts in certain regions" and that "April is often considered the best time to visit Japan because the cherry blossom are in bloom" (japan-guide). This is the peak for inbound tourism from overseas, including the US.

Late April to early May: Golden Week. Four national holidays fall within a week: Showa Day on 29 April, Constitution Memorial Day on 3 May, Greenery Day on 4 May and Children's Day on 5 May. Wikipedia describes it as "one of Japan's largest holiday periods of the year" during which "many Japanese travel domestically and to a lesser extent internationally" (Wikipedia: Golden Week). japan-guide calls it "one of Japan's busiest travel seasons" (japan-guide). Domestic demand fills planes and hotels; it also affects the outbound Japan-to-US direction, which matters for round-trip pricing.

June to early July: rainy season. "From the beginning of June, the rainy season (tsuyu) visits most parts of Japan except Hokkaido", ending "in the first half of July" (japan-guide). Demand from leisure visitors is softer.

Mid-August: Obon. Obon is most commonly observed around 15 August; the days "are not listed as public holidays, but it is customary for people to be given leave" and it functions as "a family reunion holiday" (Wikipedia: Bon Festival). japan-guide adds that "travel activity is high during the entire month due to summer school holidays, but it is especially intensive during the Obon week in mid August" (japan-guide). Japanese schools break for "about a month from late July to the end of August" (Wikipedia: School holiday).

August and September: typhoon peak. The Japan Meteorological Agency's 1991 to 2020 normals put average tropical cyclone formations in the northwest Pacific at 5.7 in August and 5.0 in September, the two highest months, against an annual total of 25.1 (JMA RSMC Tokyo). japan-guide: "The typhoon season reaches its peak in August and September" (japan-guide). Typhoons cause disruption rather than sustained high fares, but they are a reason September demand is not as strong as the weather might suggest.

November: autumn colours. "November is one of the best times to visit Japan, as the weather is relatively dry and mild, and the autumn colors are spectacular" (japan-guide). A second, smaller inbound peak.

Late December to early January: New Year. "New Year is one of Japan's three major travel seasons" with "intensive domestic and international travel activity" (japan-guide).

The US demand calendar on top

US school summer break "lasts for about 11-16 weeks, starting anywhere from the Friday before Memorial Day to late June, and ending anywhere from August to the day after Labor Day in early September" (Wikipedia: School holiday). Add Thanksgiving week and the Christmas to New Year block. When US summer break overlaps Japan's August school holidays and Obon, both ends of the route are busy at once.

Putting the two calendars together

| Month | Japan calendar | US calendar | Demand pressure | |---|---|---|---| | January (after first week) | Post New Year lull, cold | Post-holiday lull | Low | | February | Quiet; ski season in Hokkaido | Quiet | Low | | March (first half) | Pre-blossom | Some spring breaks | Moderate | | Late March to mid-April | Cherry blossom | Spring break | High | | Late April to early May | Golden Week | Quiet | High | | Mid-May to June | Post Golden Week, rainy season from June | School still in | Low to moderate | | July | Rainy season ends, heat | Summer break | Moderate to high | | August | School holidays, Obon, typhoons | Summer break | High | | September | Typhoon peak, cooler late | Back to school | Low to moderate | | October | Pleasant weather | Quiet | Moderate | | November | Autumn colours | Thanksgiving week | Moderate | | December | Build-up to New Year | Christmas | High late in month |

The "demand pressure" column is a reading of the calendars above, not a fare measurement. It points at the same conclusion most travelers reach by experience: the second half of January through early March, the weeks after Golden Week through June, and September into October are the windows where the two calendars are both quiet.

What the booking studies add

Neither Google nor Hopper publishes a Japan-specific month ranking, but two figures apply. Google's 2021 to 2025 analysis found international fares lowest "49 days or more before departure" (Google blog). Hopper advises booking trips to Asia "anywhere from 5-7 months before takeoff" and starting to watch seven to eight months out (Hopper). For a blossom-season or Golden Week trip, the long end of those horizons is the sensible one. Our guide on how far in advance to book international flights compares the studies.

Two things the calendar cannot tell you

First, direction matters on a round trip. Golden Week and Obon are Japanese holidays, so their strongest effect is on the Japan-to-US leg and on the return flights that US visitors take home. A trip that departs the US in the quiet second week of May but returns during a Japanese holiday still pays for the busy leg. Check both dates against the Japanese calendar, not just the departure.

Second, the calendar describes demand, not supply. Airlines add and remove frequencies by season, and a route with fewer flights in a quiet month can hold its price better than the calendar suggests. That is why the last step below is to look at the actual observations for your route rather than stopping at the table.

How to check real fares by month

  1. Open the destination hub for Tokyo Narita, Tokyo Haneda or Osaka to see which US cities have observed fares and what the latest checks found.
  2. Open your route page, for example Seattle to Tokyo, Los Angeles to Tokyo or San Francisco to Osaka. Each shows the lowest economy fare from the most recent daily check with its date, and, once enough days have accumulated, typical, good and great bands. How the checks are made is on /methodology.
  3. Pick the quiet window that fits your plans, choose a target at or below the route's good band, and set a Wildly alert with plus or minus 3 days if you can move. Turn on Google Flights tracking for the same search as a second signal. The free plan is enough for one trip; see /pricing.

FAQ

What is the cheapest month to fly to Japan? No published source we could load gives a month-by-month fare ranking for US to Japan, so we do not name one. The calendars above show the quietest overlaps are late January to early March, mid-May to June, and September to October. Check the live route page for what fares are doing in your window.

Is cherry blossom season always expensive? It is the peak for overseas visitors, and it is immediately followed by Golden Week, so late March through early May is the most sustained period of high demand in the year.

Is September a bad time because of typhoons? September is the second-highest month for tropical cyclone formation in JMA's normals. Disruption risk is real, which is one reason demand is softer. If you go, build a day of slack into the itinerary and buy a fare that allows changes.

Should I fly into Narita, Haneda or Osaka? Compare them. Fares differ by airport as well as by month, and the hubs above show which US origins have observed fares for each.
