This British-influenced former colony sits 40 miles south of Turkey and offers genuinely cheap beaches, Neolithic villages frozen in time, and some of Europe's best-preserved Byzantine churches. You'll find yourself in a place where a three-course dinner costs $12, the coastline is yours alone in October, and locals still remember when tourism hadn't ruined everything. The island splits culturally between the Greek south (where Americans fly in) and the Turkish north (separate political entity—don't try to cross without permission). Americans love Cyprus because flights are reasonable, the food is incredible, the beaches rival Greece at half the cost, and you can actually see archaeological sites without elbowing 10,000 other tourists.

Getting Around
Cyprus has no trains—only buses and cars. OSYPA (Cyprus Public Transport) runs frequent inter-city buses connecting Larnaca, Paphos, Limassol, and Nicosia; a ticket from Larnaca to Paphos costs $10-12 and takes 2.5 hours. Minibuses (shared taxis called 'service taxis') are faster and cost $12-15 for the same route—they depart when full from central stations. Rent a car from Budget, Hertz, or local company Thrifty-equivalent companies for $25-40/day with basic insurance; drive on the left (British legacy), roads are good, and parking is easy outside tourist zones. Taxis in cities are metered but negotiate before getting in for longer distances; Uber doesn't operate here. Domestic flights don't exist—island is small enough that driving beats flying. Public buses are cheap ($1-3 per ride in cities) but run on Cypriot time (late, irregular). For beach hopping, rent a car; for city stays, walk and use buses.
Practical Tips
Buy a Cyta (state telecom) or Vodafone Cyprus SIM card at the airport kiosk immediately upon arrival—costs €5-10 for the card. Cyta is more reliable in rural areas; Vodafone has better 4G in cities. A 5GB/month plan costs €15-20 and includes unlimited texts/calls. Buy data-only if you already have a local number. Top-up is instant at supermarkets (Carrefour, Lidl) or gas stations. Coverage is solid everywhere except deep mountains. eSIM doesn't exist locally (old infrastructure). For a 2-week trip, buy one €20 plan; Cyprus is small enough you won't burn through it.
Tipping is customary but not mandatory—locals tip 5-10% for good service. In tavernas, round up the bill or leave 5-8% for table service; casual souvlaki stands need no tip. Taxi drivers expect rounding up (if fare is €8.50, give €10) but don't require percentage tipping. Hotel staff: €1-2 per night for housekeeping, €2-3 for bellhops. Restaurants: 10% is generous and appreciated but not expected if service was mediocre; many tourists don't tip at all and it's fine. Credit cards at restaurants often have a tipping prompt set to 15-20%—ignore this as a foreigner, it's not standard locally. Worst mistake: over-tipping convinces restaurants to keep prices inflated for tourists.
Extremely safe. Cyprus is one of Europe's safest islands with virtually no violent crime against tourists. Petty theft (bag snatching) happens rarely in Limassol's nightlife district but almost nowhere else. Police are visible and helpful. Turkish military presence in the north is stable and not a concern for tourists—the border buffer zone is off-limits but you won't accidentally wander there. Healthcare is excellent (private hospitals are very good, EU-standard). Only real risk: drunk driving on weekend nights by locals—take taxis after 11 PM instead of renting a car that night. Women solo travelers report feeling safer here than Greece. Don't carry large amounts of cash; use ATMs in city centers. Standard urban precautions apply (watch bags in crowded areas), but crime is genuinely low.
Skip Limassol's tourist beaches entirely and drive 15 minutes east to Tochni or Mazotos for completely empty, equally beautiful sand with tavernas full of locals eating €8 grilled fish. Better yet: visit in October instead of summer—same weather as June, flights cost $300 less, no crowds, locals actually make eye contact. Also: Cypriot wine is criminally underrated and cheap ($5-8 for excellent bottles at tavernas); try Maratheftiko varietal and KEO beer, skip the tourist trap tavernas in Paphos old town (they charge 3x normal prices), and eat only in places with no English menus—that's where the €4 meze platters hide. Pro move: rent a car for just 2-3 days to reach Akamas Peninsula's beaches (impossible by bus), then ditch it and use buses in cities. Book flights for Tuesday-Thursday departures, not weekends—saves $100-150 consistently.
