About Tallinn
Tallinn is one of the best-preserved medieval cities in Europe, and it's criminally undervisited by Americans who tend to stop at Helsinki and call it a day. The Old Town — a UNESCO World Heritage Site — looks like someone built a fairy-tale backdrop and then forgot to tear it down. Cobblestone streets, Gothic spires, and 13th-century fortifications are all crammed into a walkable area where you can spend hours without once needing to check Google Maps. The best part? Prices are still a fraction of what you'd pay in Stockholm, Copenhagen, or even Prague.

Airport to City: How to Get There
Tallinn Airport (TLL) is only 4km from Old Town — embarrassingly close. Option 1: Bus #2 runs directly from the airport to the city center (stop: Viru Keskus) every 10-20 minutes, costs €2 with a contactless card tap on the validator, and takes about 20 minutes. Option 2: Taxis via the Bolt app cost €5-10 to Old Town and take 8-12 minutes — significantly cheaper than hailing a cab at the terminal. Option 3: Official airport taxis at the terminal rank run €12-18 to the city center; they're metered and legitimate but Bolt is always cheaper. There is no rail link.
Neighborhoods & Where to Stay
The UNESCO-listed medieval core with Toompea Hill (upper town) and the Lower Town below it — staying here puts you inside the fairy tale but at a premium. Hotel Telegraaf and Schlössle Hotel are the luxury stalwarts, while Viru Backpackers serves budget travelers within the walls. Expect restaurant prices to run 20-30% higher than Kalamaja for often equivalent food quality.
The coolest neighborhood in Tallinn, full stop — a 10-minute walk from Old Town but a world away in vibe. Former fishermen's wooden houses now host design studios, independent coffee shops (try Kohvik Moon or Röstitud), and the Telliskivi Creative City complex. This is where young Tallinn actually lives and eats; F-Hoone does excellent weekend brunch with a great natural wine list.
A leafy, peaceful district built around Peter the Great's baroque palace and park — ideal if you want quiet mornings and a residential feel. The Kadriorg Art Museum and KUMU (Estonia's premier contemporary art museum) are both here, and the neighborhood has excellent café-patisseries like Café Maiasmokk's less touristy cousin, Café Kanapää. About a 20-minute walk or short tram ride from Old Town.
The area around Viru Keskus shopping mall and the bus/tram hub is where you'll find the most affordable hotels and the Viru Hotel (a Soviet-era behemoth with a genuinely fascinating KGB museum on the top floor). Functional but not romantic; good for budget travelers who want efficient transit access. The Estonian History Museum and Tallinn Central Market are nearby.
Tallinn's seaside suburb along the Baltic coast, about 6km from the center — the Meriton Conference & Spa Hotel and Pirita Marina area attract a wealthier clientele. Best for travelers who want beach access and breathing room; the seaside promenade and Tallinn Botanical Garden are highlights. Requires a bus (#1A, #8, #38) or Bolt to get anywhere meaningful.
Daily Budget: What to Expect
$18 hostel dorm at Viru Backpackers or Generator Tallinn, $20 food (grocery breakfast, lunch at Tallinn Market hall, dinner at a local cafeteria-style kohvik), $5 bus day pass, $12 one paid attraction (Kiek in de Kök tower or Toompea Castle), $10 beer or coffee
$80 mid-range hotel room (Hotel Bern, My City Hotel), $45 food (café breakfast, lunch at F-Hoone, dinner at Leib Resto, one craft beer), $10 transit, $25 activities and one museum entry
$200 boutique hotel (Schlössle, Hotel Telegraaf, Three Sisters), $100 dining (tasting menu at NOA Chef's Hall or Fotografiska Tallinn restaurant), $30 spa session, $30 private guided tour or boat excursion, $20 transport and incidentals
What to Eat in Tallinn
Vana-Tallinn liqueur chocolates from Kalev candy shop — the national liqueur made into truffles, weirdly addictive and a perfect edible souvenir that costs about €4 per box
Black bread (rukkileib) with local butter and smoked fish at Tallinn Central Market (Keskturg) — the genuine article is nothing like the dense bricks sold as 'Estonian rye' abroad, and a full market breakfast costs under €5
Elk stroganoff or wild boar stew at Restoran Kuldse Notsu Kõrts in Old Town — tourists dismiss it as a trap but the game dishes are legitimately excellent and locally sourced from Estonian forests for around €16-20
Leib (meaning 'bread') at Leib Resto ja Aed — the seasonal Nordic-Estonian tasting menu in a garden setting behind the Old Town walls is the best fine-dining value in the city at €55-75 per person with wine pairing
Põhjala craft beer flight at Põhjala Taproom in Noblessneri Foundry — Estonia's best brewery does dark Baltic porters and saisons from a stunning industrial-heritage venue; a 4-glass flight costs about €12 and the smoked cheese board is mandatory

Safety Tips
Tallinn is genuinely one of the safest cities in Europe for tourists — violent crime against visitors is extremely rare. The main threats are petty: pickpocketing in the crowded Old Town in July and August, and overcharging taxis if you don't use Bolt (always use Bolt). The area around the train station (Balti jaam) can feel sketchy late at night but is not actually dangerous. Watch your drinks in Old Town bars during summer stag party season (Tallinn is a popular stag destination from Finland and the UK) — drink spiking has been reported occasionally. Cobblestones are legitimately treacherous in winter ice; microspike attachments for boots are sold at the Prisma supermarket near the bus station for €8-12 and are worth it. Don't be alarmed if locals seem blunt — Estonian directness is cultural, not hostility.
The Tallinn Card (€29 for 24 hours, €39 for 48 hours) gets you free public transit, free entry to 40+ museums, and free guided walking tours — run the numbers against what you plan to see and it almost always pays off within a single day if you're doing any museums at all. But the real hack is this: buy it at the Tallinn Tourist Information Centre inside the Old Town, not at the airport kiosks where they charge a €3 service fee. Also, the ferry to Helsinki takes only 2 hours on the fastest Tallink Megastar service and costs €25-45 each way booked in advance — if you're already in Tallinn, adding one night in Helsinki (or vice versa) for under €50 in ferry costs is one of the best value moves in Northern European travel.

Do US citizens need a visa to visit Tallinn?
US passport holders get 90 days visa-free within any 180-day period under the Schengen Agreement — Estonia is a full Schengen member.
