About Fiji
Fiji is the gateway to South Pacific island living without the pretension or astronomical prices of French Polynesia. Nadi serves as your arrival hub, but the real Fiji happens on the outer islands—Viti Levu's resorts, Denarau Island's tourist corridor, and the Mamanuca Islands' backpacker-friendly communities. Americans love Fiji because it delivers genuine tropical isolation, world-class diving and snorkeling (the Coral Coast and Bligh Water rivals the Great Barrier Reef at a fraction of the cost), and a genuinely welcoming culture that hasn't been crushed by mass tourism yet. The Fijian people speak English fluently, use the Fijian Dollar (not some colonial currency designed to bankrupt you), and actually seem happy to see tourists rather than viewing them as walking ATMs.

Airport to City: How to Get There
Nadi International Airport (NAN) sits 13km from Nadi town and about 45km from Denarau Island resort hub. Option 1: Shared shuttle vans (most tourists do this) cost FJD$15-20 ($7-10 USD) and take 45 minutes to Denarau or 30 minutes to Nadi town—book through your resort or grab one at the airport exit (they're everywhere). Option 2: Taxi from the rank outside baggage claim costs FJD$35-50 ($16-23 USD) for the same distance but 25-35 minutes depending on traffic; negotiate before entering. Option 3: Rental car from the airport (Hertz, Avis present) costs FJD$45-60 ($21-28 USD) per day but unnecessary if staying at one resort since you'll pay ridiculous island transfer fees anyway. Skip Uber—it doesn't operate consistently in Fiji. Most backpackers and mid-range travelers use shuttle buses and only grab taxis if arriving at odd hours or with large groups.
Neighborhoods & Where to Stay
The tourist corridor 30km from the airport where 90% of resort tourists stay. Features Outrigger, Radisson, Sofitel, and dozens of mid-range resorts with beaches, bars, and restaurants within walking distance. You're paying for convenience and developed infrastructure, not authenticity—locals use ferries to escape the island in evenings. Pick Denarau if you want guaranteed comfort, don't want to hassle with island transfers, and prefer reef access within 10 minutes by boat.
Southern Viti Levu's steep volcanic coastline with resorts perched on cliffsides offering dramatic views. Less crowded than Denarau, better snorkeling from shore, and closer to actual Fijian villages. Includes properties like Bedarra Island (overwater bungalows), Naviti Resort, and dozens of smaller operations. Requires 90-minute drive from airport but rewards you with genuine tropical beauty and fewer Australian families.
The actual city with Colonial-era buildings, markets, budget guesthouses, and the real Fiji. Avoid the tourist trap restaurants on Main Street and instead eat at the market stalls near the bus station where locals line up for curry and roti. Stay at Smugglers' Cove (backpacker standard) or Nadi Bay Resort for under FJD$40 ($18-19 USD) per night. You'll see chaotic street life, actual Fijian commerce, and zero resort artificial atmosphere.
Off-the-beaten-path islands accessible by ferry from Denarau, targeting young travelers and party crowds. Beachcomber Island is the backpacker hub with all-you-can-drink island nights, snorkeling, and FJD$25-45 ($11-21 USD) dorm beds. Less polished than resort islands but genuine, affordable, and full of other budget travelers making friends. Best option if you actually want to meet people rather than zone out on a private beach.
Capital city on Viti Levu's eastern side, almost never visited by tourists (and that's the appeal). Features Colonial government buildings, museums, authentic Indian restaurants, and zero English-speaking staff in most shops. Only visit if you actively hate typical tourist infrastructure and want to experience 'real Fiji'—the drive from Nadi takes 4+ hours through interior roads.
Daily Budget: What to Expect
FJD$20 ($9) hostel dorm in Nadi or Beachcomber Island, FJD$18 ($8) street food (roti, curry, tropical fruit from markets), FJD$15 ($7) snorkeling/beach activities (many free, some tours FJD$30-40), FJD$12 ($5) local transport (buses, small ferries)
FJD$100-120 ($45-55) mid-range resort room at Denarau or Coral Coast, FJD$40-50 ($18-23) meals (eating at resort restaurants without tour markups), FJD$30-40 ($14-18) guided diving or snorkeling trips, FJD$15-20 ($7-9) local transport
FJD$200-300 ($90-135) private bungalow resort (overwater at Bedarra, clifftop at Coral Coast), FJD$80-100 ($36-45) meals (high-end restaurants in resorts), FJD$60-80 ($27-36) private diving charters or helicopter tours, FJD$20-30 ($9-14) boat transfers between islands
What to Eat in Fiji
Kokonda (raw fish marinated in lime juice and coconut cream, served in a coconut bowl)—order at any beachside shack or market; it's the Fijian national dish and tastes like the ocean distilled into creaminess
Lovo (whole pig slow-roasted underground in coconut husks and banana leaves for 6+ hours)—available at resort buffets and village feasts; reserve through your guesthouse a day ahead for the real experience outside tourist resorts
Dhal puri and spiced chickpea curry at a street vendor near Nadi market (FJD$3-4)—Fiji's Indian population dominates the food scene; this combination is better than most Indian restaurants charge 10x for elsewhere
Taveuni-caught mahi-mahi grilled with island lime at a beachside restaurant on Coral Coast—order it fresh-caught that day; the fish here rivals Hawaii at 1/3 the price
Cassava and taro chips fried in coconut oil from a market stall—sounds boring, tastes like tropical comfort food; grab a paper cone for FJD$2 and sit on a bench watching boats

- →Fiji Airways nonstop from Los Angeles (LAX) to Nadi (NAN)—only direct option from mainland US; ~13 hours overnight; premium pricing but you avoid connections
- →Delta via Honolulu (JFK/ATL to HNL to NAN)—typically requires 6-8 hour layover in Honolulu; ~20 hours total; middle-ground pricing
- →United via Honolulu or Tokyo (SFO/EWR to HND to NAN or SFO to HNL to NAN)—similar routing to Delta; slightly cheaper but longer total time
- →Air New Zealand via Auckland (multiple US gateways to AKL to NAN)—common routing for East Coast travelers; ~18-20 hours with 3-4 hour layover

Safety Tips
Fiji is generally safe for tourists but petty theft is common in Nadi town and Suva—don't flash expensive cameras, leave valuables in your room safe, and avoid walking alone after dark in urban areas. Never hike interior trails solo; hire a local guide (FJD$30-50) through your resort—getting lost in jungle and requiring rescue happens to overconfident Americans yearly. Respect village protocol: remove shoes before entering homes, ask permission before photographing people, and understand that 'kava' ceremonies are cultural events, not tourist performances. Tap water is safe in resorts and towns but bottled water is cheaper than everywhere else (FJD$1 for 1.5L) so just buy it. Don't drink ocean water near river mouths or after heavy rain—bacterial contamination closes beaches for days. Respect marine life: don't touch coral, feed fish, or stand on reef; the ecosystem is fragile and locals depend on it for food. Rental cars are fine on main roads but driving at night exposes you to potholes and occasional drunk drivers—use taxis for evening trips or use the extensive minibus network (locals know all routes).
Book island hopper flights through Fiji Airways (the inter-island subsidiary) directly rather than through resorts—resorts mark them up 30-40%. A Fiji Airways flight from Nadi to Savusavu costs FJD$180 ($82 USD) direct online but your resort will quote FJD$230-250 ($105-114 USD). Download the Fiji Airways app and book all inter-island flights before arriving. Also, rent a 4WD vehicle from a local operator in Nadi for a day (FJD$100-120 / $45-55 USD) and explore the interior of Viti Levu yourself instead of doing organized 'cultural tours'—you'll see actual villages, meet real Fijians, and eat at roadside curry stalls for a fraction of tour costs while your tour bus group photographs people like zoo animals 50 meters away.
