Uber/Lyft from downtown runs $18-28 depending on surge, and rideshare pickup is well-organized at Terminal 1. Rental cars and taxis available but unnecessary for most travelers. Getting from CGK into Jakarta
Soekarno-Hatta (CGK) is 20km from downtown but Jakarta traffic makes it feel further. Best options: (1) Airport Express Train — the Railink Bandara service runs from CGK's underground station to Sudirman/BNI City station in central Jakarta for Rp 70,000 (~$4.30) in about 40 minutes; buy tickets at the airport or via the Railink app. This is the only reliable, time-certain option. (2) Grab/Gojek — ride-hailing apps quote fixed prices from CGK; expect Rp 120,000-180,000 ($7.50-$11) to Sudirman/Menteng in good traffic, but add 45-90 minutes in peak hours — budget 2 hours from landing to hotel during rush hour. (3) Silver Bird or Blue Bird taxi from the official taxi queue — metered, honest, roughly Rp 200,000-280,000 ($12-17) to central Jakarta plus toll fees. Never use unmarked taxis that solicit inside the terminal.

Menteng
mid-rangeJakarta's most livable central neighborhood — tree-lined Dutch colonial streets, old embassies, and the best concentration of traditional Indonesian restaurants and warungs in the city. Thamrin 10 cultural center runs free weekend events here. Stay at Hotel Cikini or Morrissey Hotel Residences for solid mid-range options ($60-90/night) with walking access to the National Museum and Merdeka Square.
Sudirman-Thamrin (SCBD/CBD)
luxuryThe gleaming financial district with Jakarta's best luxury hotels (Four Seasons, Raffles, Ritz-Carlton Mega Kuningan all clustered here), the Pacific Place and Grand Indonesia malls, and the new MRT spine running the length of Sudirman Avenue. Room rates start around $150/night for proper luxury. Not the most 'authentic' experience but maximally convenient, especially if arriving late or leaving early.
Local planning tip
Book your last night's hotel near the Manggarai or Sudirman train stations rather than the airport side of the city — the Airport Express (Railink Bandara) from BNI City/Sudirman station to CGK takes exactly 40 minutes with no traffic variability, costs $4.30, and runs until 11pm. This eliminates the single biggest source of Jakarta stress (road traffic to the airport) and lets you sleep in your actual hotel instead of paying for an overpriced airport hotel. Set an alarm for 2.5 hours before your flight departure, walk to the station, and you're done. Also: download the Gojek app before you arrive and add a credit card — this single app handles motorbike taxis, car rides, food delivery, and even grocery orders, and it's often 30-40% cheaper than Grab for short trips.
Visa and entry notes for US travelers
US passport holders get free visa-free entry to Indonesia for up to 30 days as of 2025-2026, under Indonesia's expanded visa-free program. You do not need to apply in advance — present your US passport at immigration at CGK, show your onward ticket, and you'll receive a 30-day stamp at no charge. If you need more than 30 days, you can purchase a Visa on Arrival (VoA) for $35 USD at the dedicated VoA counters before reaching passport control — this grants 30 days and can be extended once inside Indonesia for another 30 days at an immigration office. There is no visa required for Americans for purely tourist purposes. Ensure your passport has at least 6 months validity beyond your entry date and at least one blank visa page.
