Reaching Phoenix Sky Harbor International
Light Rail (Valley Metro): $4 one-way, 45-50 minutes from downtown Phoenix (Central Station), runs every 15 minutes during peak times. Best budget option if you're staying downtown; luggage carts fit fine. Uber/Lyft: $18-28 from downtown, 20-25 minutes off-peak (6-9am and 4-8pm expect 30-40 minutes). Parking at nearby hotels and taking Uber to airport is often cheaper than airport parking if you're staying 2+ days. Rental car: Pick up at airport but don't rent just for the ride there—Enterprise off-airport locations offer slightly cheaper rates.
Getting from BGI into Barbados
Grantley Adams International Airport (BGI) is in Christ Church, about 8 miles from Bridgetown and 13 miles from the west coast resorts. Option 1: Taxi — fixed government rates apply; Bridgetown runs about $30 USD, west coast hotels (Sandy Lane area) about $40-$50 USD, 25-35 minutes. Option 2: ZR minibuses (route vans) depart from outside arrivals — extremely cheap at about $2 USD to Bridgetown but they're cramped, stop frequently, and hard to navigate with luggage; locals love them, tourists rarely use them. Option 3: Pre-booked private transfers through your hotel or Island Routes run $35-$60 depending on destination but include meet-and-greet and are worth it for first-timers.
Planning Phoenix to Barbados
Barbados punches above its weight for a 166-square-mile island. It's the most polished Caribbean destination you can reach nonstop from the US East Coast — think reliable electricity, pothole-free roads, world-class rum, and a food scene that would embarrass most American cities. Unlike Jamaica or St. Lucia, Barbados has almost zero hustle-tourist friction; locals are genuinely welcoming rather than transactionally friendly. The west coast ("Platinum Coast") hosts the luxury resorts, while the east coast faces Atlantic surf and fishing villages where tourists are still a novelty.

St. Lawrence Gap (The Gap)
budgetThe party strip in Christ Church, lined with bars, cheap restaurants, and guesthouses within walking distance of Rockley Beach. Café Sol does strong margaritas, Champers is the upscale exception for a splurge dinner with cliffside views. Best for under-35 travelers who want nightlife and beach access without paying west coast prices.
Holetown, St. James
luxuryThe heart of the Platinum Coast — home to Limegrove Lifestyle Centre (luxury shopping), Zaccios and The Tides restaurants, and the best stretch of west coast beach. Cobbler's Cove and Colony Club hotels anchor the top end. Everything here costs 30-40% more than the south coast, but the calm Caribbean water and sunset views justify it.
Local planning tip
Rent a car for at least one day (about $55-$70 USD/day from Stoutes or Drive-a-Matic, both reputable local operators) and drive the entire island in a loop: west coast north to Speightstown, across to Bathsheba on the east, south through the Scotland District to Crane Beach, back through Oistins. The whole loop takes 3-4 hours with stops and shows you a completely different island from the resort strip. Critically, buy your rum directly at the Foursquare distillery gift shop or at the Duty Free in the departure terminal AFTER clearing security at BGI — airport duty-free prices on Mount Gay Extra Old and Foursquare Exceptional Cask selections are 40-50% cheaper than US retail, and you're allowed to bring back 1 liter duty-free per person (or up to 5 liters paying a small duty that still makes it worth it).
Visa and entry notes for US travelers
US passport holders get visa-free entry to Barbados for up to 6 months. You'll fill out an immigration form on the plane; have your hotel address and onward/return ticket ready at the immigration desk. A valid US passport is required (no passport card for air travel). There's no entry fee or tourist tax at immigration though some hotels add a small government accommodation tax to bills. Make sure your passport has at least 6 months validity beyond your travel dates.
