From PDX airport to Hanoi
Reaching Portland International Airport
MAX light rail Red Line runs directly from downtown Pioneer Courthouse Square to the airport in 38 minutes for $2.50 one-way (2026 pricing). Trains run every 15 minutes 5am-midnight, less frequently after hours. Rideshare (Uber/Lyft) runs $18-28 from downtown depending on surge pricing — mornings are cheaper ($16-20 typically) than evenings. Paid parking at downtown lots costs $8-15/day, so the MAX combo is nearly always better. Taxi from downtown is fixed $28 flat rate, reliable but slower than Uber during non-peak. Rental car desk is on the ground level; don't rent unless you're leaving the city immediately.
Getting from HAN into Hanoi
Noi Bai International Airport (HAN) is 28km north of the city center — farther than it looks on a map. Option 1: Grab or Be (rideshare apps) costs 250,000-350,000 VND (~$10-14) and is the smartest choice — book from the official app inside arrivals to avoid scammy taxi touts. Option 2: Vietnam Airlines Airport Bus 86 runs every 30-40 minutes to the Old Quarter (Dinh Le St) for 45,000 VND (~$1.80) and takes 45-60 minutes with no traffic — surprisingly comfortable and seats labeled. Option 3: Official taxis (Mai Linh or Noi Bai Taxi) from the designated rank cost 350,000-500,000 VND (~$14-20) depending on destination; insist on the meter. Avoid any driver who approaches you before you reach the official taxi stand.
Planning Portland to Hanoi

Old Quarter (Hoan Kiem)
budgetThe 36 streets of ancient Hanoi — chaotic, loud, endlessly interesting, and packed with cheap guesthouses from $15-30/night. Dong Xuan market, Beer Street (Ta Hien), and the best pho and bun cha joints are all within walking distance. Noise is significant on main streets; book a room on a side alley if sleep matters to you.
French Quarter (Ba Dinh / Hoan Kiem South)
mid-rangeWide, tree-lined boulevards, the Opera House, and Hoan Kiem Lake's southern shore — this is Hanoi at its most beautiful and manageable. Hotels like the Hotel de l'Opera run $80-150/night; the area has excellent restaurants, rooftop bars, and is walkable to everything. Sofitel Metropole is here too, if you're splurging on history.
Local planning tip
Book your Ha Long Bay cruise directly through a reputable small operator like Indochina Junk or Paradise Cruises instead of through your hotel or an Old Quarter tour desk — you'll pay 20-30% less for the exact same boat and avoid the commission markup. Also, the overnight train to Sapa on the Victoria Express or Livitrans sleeper (book at least a week ahead at about $30 each way) beats any bus and saves a night's hotel; book your return train before you go up because Sapa-bound trains sell out on weekends.
Visa and entry notes for US travelers
As of 2025-2026, US passport holders get 45 days visa-free entry to Vietnam under the 2023 updated policy (extended from the previous 15 days). You must show proof of onward travel. An e-visa ($25, processed in 3 business days at evisa.xuatnhapcanh.gov.vn) allows 90 days single-entry and is strongly recommended for longer stays — apply at least a week before departure. You can also get a 90-day multiple-entry visa through the embassy for $100+. The e-visa is the cleanest option for most American travelers. Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your entry date.
