Reaching Minneapolis-Saint Paul International
Blue Line light rail from downtown Minneapolis: $2.50 one-way, 32 minutes from Target Field Station to airport, runs every 10-15 minutes. Reliable and the best value, but service ends at 12:30am. Uber/Lyft from downtown: $18-28 depending on surge, 25-35 minutes. Super Shuttle shared van: $18 one-way from downtown, 45-60 minutes, departs hourly. Rental car pickup is in the economy lot east of terminals—$3.50 for 24 hours.
Getting from BUD into Budapest
Budapest Liszt Ferenc Airport (BUD) is 16km southeast of the city center with three practical options. The 100E airport express bus (400 Ft, about $1.10) runs every 20 minutes to Deák Ferenc tér in central Pest, taking 35-45 minutes — this is the best value by far and the buses are modern. A taxi from the official Főtaxi stand costs a fixed 9,900 Ft (roughly $27) to most of central Pest; book at the official booth, not from anyone approaching you inside arrivals. Rideshare via Bolt (the dominant app in Budapest) typically runs 7,000-8,500 Ft depending on traffic, which is cheaper than taxi if you already have a Hungarian SIM or roaming data.
Planning Minneapolis to Budapest
Budapest is one of Europe's last great underpriced capitals, and Americans who discover it tend to come back. Straddling the Danube with Buda's hilly castle district on one side and Pest's flat, cafe-dense grid on the other, it has the architectural grandeur of Vienna at roughly 40% of the cost. The thermal bath culture alone — ancient Turkish baths, art nouveau palaces full of sulfurous water — is reason enough to visit, but the city also punches hard on food, nightlife, and sheer visual drama. The Parliament building lit up at night from the Chain Bridge might be the best free view in all of Europe.

District V (Belváros-Lipótváros)
luxuryThe historic inner city on the Pest side, home to the Parliament, Chain Bridge approaches, and the Four Seasons Gresham Palace. Hotels here (Marriott, Kempinski, Intercontinental) sit right on the Danube promenade and command the best views. Restaurants are tourist-priced but the location for walkability to major sights is unbeatable.
District VII (Erzsébetváros - Jewish Quarter)
mid-rangeThe most exciting neighborhood in the city: the old Jewish quarter packed with ruin bars, wine bars, independent restaurants, and the stunning Dohány Street Synagogue. Stay at Brody House or a boutique apartment here to be within stumbling distance of Szimpla Kert and Instant. Best area for nightlife and a genuinely local street-food scene.
Local planning tip
Buy a 24-hour or 72-hour Budapest transit pass (3,450 Ft / ~$9.50 for 24hrs) at any metro station before getting on anything — inspectors are aggressive and the 16,000 Ft fine for fare evasion is non-negotiable. More importantly: eat at the Great Market Hall on a weekday morning (it closes at 3pm most days, 2pm Saturday, closed Sunday) when it functions as a real food market for locals rather than a tourist photo-op; the ready-made lángos counter on the ground floor has the best in the city at prices that feel almost comically cheap.
Visa and entry notes for US travelers
US passport holders get 90 days visa-free in Hungary under the Schengen Agreement — no advance application needed. Hungary is fully in the Schengen Zone, so your 90-day clock counts across all Schengen countries (not just Hungary). The EU ETA (European Travel Information and Authorization System) is rolling out for US citizens but is not yet required as of early 2026; check travel.state.gov before your trip. Your passport must be valid for at least 3 months beyond your intended departure date from the Schengen Area.
