From MIA airport to Lima
Reaching Miami International
Taxi from downtown Miami (Brickell/Wynwood): $35-50, 25-35 minutes depending on traffic. Uber/Lyft: $22-38, 30-40 minutes off-peak, but surge pricing is real during 5-9 AM and 4-7 PM — expect $50+ during rush. Tri-Rail + Mover: Tri-Rail from downtown costs $3.50 and takes 30 minutes to the airport station, then the automated Mover (free with Tri-Rail ticket) takes 4 minutes to terminals. Total time 40 minutes, $3.50 — cheapest option but requires planning around Tri-Rail schedule (not frequent after 9 PM). The Mover alone (no rail) is $2 and connects terminals if you're dropped at one terminal but need another.
Getting from LIM into Lima
Taxi via official airport taxi counter (inside arrivals hall): S/65–80 (~$17–21) to Miraflores, S/55–65 (~$14–17) to San Isidro — takes 25–45 min depending on traffic, longer during rush hour. Do NOT take taxis from touts approaching you outside. Uber and Cabify work reliably from the airport for S/35–55 (~$9–14) to Miraflores — open the app inside arrivals before going out. There is no public transit option worth taking from LIM with luggage; the bus system is confusing and slow for newcomers. Budget travelers can take the bus route to Miraflores for under S/3 but it involves a 10-min walk to the stop and 45-60 min travel — only viable if you're going light.
Planning Miami to Lima
Lima has quietly become one of the most compelling food cities on the planet, and Americans are finally catching on. This is the city that gave the world ceviche, tiradito, lomo saltado, and causa — dishes that have spawned entire restaurant movements globally but taste completely different here, made with Peruvian aji amarillo, fresh Pacific fish pulled that morning, and techniques refined over centuries. Central, Maido, and Astrid & Gastón consistently rank among the world's top 50 restaurants, but you don't need to drop $300 a head to eat brilliantly — a cevichería in Surquillo or Barranco will destroy your expectations for under $15.

Two areas to consider
Miraflores
mid-rangeThe main tourist hub sitting on Pacific cliffs with manicured parks, Larcomar mall built into the clifftop, and wall-to-wall restaurants. Safe to walk at night, ATMs everywhere, English widely spoken. Stay at the boutique JW Marriott or Hotel B Miraflores (~$120–200/night) if splurging, or Casa Andina Standard for a reliable mid-range at $70–90.
Barranco
mid-rangeLima's Bohemian art district one neighborhood south of Miraflores — colorful colonial houses, the famous Bridge of Sighs, craft breweries, and cevicherías alongside galleries and boutique hotels. More atmospheric and local-feeling than Miraflores. Base here if you care about food and nightlife over hotel amenities; the 3BR Hostal Gemina or La Paisana boutique hotel hit $60–100/night.
Local planning tip
Book your Central or Maido reservation before you book your flights — seriously. Tables open exactly 60 days in advance on their websites and are gone within hours. If you want to eat at either restaurant (and you should — Maido's Nikkei tasting menu is arguably more accessible and just as brilliant as Central at $120pp vs $230pp), this is non-negotiable trip planning step #1. Also: fly into Lima on the late-night red-eye from Miami or New York, arrive at 5-6am, store your bags at the airport left-luggage counter (S/15/bag), take an Uber to Miraflores, and eat breakfast at a bakery until your hotel room is ready at 2pm — you lose no travel day and often save $150+ vs booking an extra night.
Visa and entry notes for US travelers
US passport holders do not need a visa for Peru. You receive a tourist entry permit (Tarjeta Andina de Migración) allowing stays of up to 183 days, stamped in your passport on arrival at LIM. No advance registration required. Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your entry date. There is no tourist tax at LIM airport for arrivals — exit fees are included in airfare. Keep your entry card safe as you'll need to surrender it on departure. If you lose it, get a replacement at Migraciones before your flight (annoying but doable). No vaccinations are required for Lima specifically, but Yellow Fever vaccination is required if you're coming from or going to the Peruvian jungle (Amazon region) and is strongly recommended regardless.
