Getting from WAW into Warsaw
The cheapest and often fastest option is the SKM/KM suburban rail — trains run every 15-30 minutes from the airport's basement station directly to Warsaw Centralna (main train station) in about 20 minutes, costing around 9 PLN (~$2.25). Buy tickets from machines in the terminal before boarding. The metro is accessible from Centralna if your hotel is near a Line 1 or Line 2 stop. Uber or Bolt (the dominant rideshare in Poland) runs about 35-55 PLN ($9-14) to central Warsaw with no surge, and takes 20-40 minutes depending on traffic — the best value if you have luggage. Official taxis from the rank outside arrivals cost more (70-100 PLN) and are only worth it late at night when Bolt surge pricing kicks in. Avoid unmarked cabs entirely.

Śródmieście (City Center)
mid-rangeThe central district runs from Warsaw Centralna station north through Plac Defilad and the Palace of Culture. Most hotels cluster here for transit convenience, and Nowy Świat street is the main dining and café corridor. It's not the hippest area but it's supremely functional — you're 5 minutes from everything.
Stare Miasto (Old Town)
mid-rangeThe reconstructed medieval old town is UNESCO-listed and genuinely beautiful, though touristy. Restaurants on the main square charge 30-50% more than elsewhere — eat one meal here for the atmosphere, then escape to better value a few blocks south on Freta Street. Hotels here tend to be boutique and pricier but worth it if you want that cobblestone-at-dawn experience.

Buy a Warsaw City Card for 24 or 48 hours (available at the airport and most hotels) only if you plan to hit 3+ paid museums in that window — the Rising Museum alone costs 35 PLN and is worth it standalone. But the real money-saver almost no one uses: LOT's 'SuperSaver' fares from JFK or ORD show up in Wildly alerts and can drop to $380-450 roundtrip in shoulder season (March-April, October-November). Set alerts for WAW from JFK and ORD simultaneously — when prices dip, they usually dip on both routes at the same time, meaning you have a 48-hour window before they fill up.
Visa and entry notes for US travelers
