Take Metro Line 2 to Vitosha station on a clear morning and walk the 45-minute Golden Bridges trail — it costs $0, the mountain air is legitimately alpine, and you'll have it nearly to yourself on weekdays. A classical and contemporary music festival held across Sofia's concert halls and outdoor venues throughout May and June. The Bulgaria Concert Hall (Zala Bulgaria) hosts headline events; tickets start at $10. Coincides with perfect weather, making it one of the best-timed reasons to visit.
Bulgaria's LGBTQ+ Pride parade typically marches in mid-June through central Sofia, drawing tens of thousands of participants. The event has grown significantly since the early 2010s and is peaceful and festive. Counter-protests occasionally happen but are separated by police; the atmosphere at the parade itself is celebratory.
Every five years (next: 2025, then 2030), Bulgaria's largest folk music and dance festival takes place in the mountain village of Koprivshtitsa, 115km from Sofia. On off-years, smaller regional versions happen. It's a two-hour drive from Sofia and utterly unlike anything else in Europe — thousands of dancers and musicians in traditional costumes performing in open fields.
A week-long design and architecture festival in early June that takes over various industrial spaces, galleries, and public squares. Mostly free to attend; heavy on local Bulgarian design, street art installations, and pop-up markets. The Opening Night party at the Toplocentrala (a converted power plant) is one of Sofia's coolest annual events.
