Go to Vergina for the atmospheric tombs, but see the artifacts in the city museum first so you know what you're looking at.
Where to Stay
Former warehouse district turned nightlife and dining hub, one block from the port. Streets are pedestrianized and packed with tavernas, meze bars, and live rebetiko music venues on weekends. Stay at the Electra Palace or a boutique guesthouse here for perfect walkability to both the waterfront and Aristotelous Square.
The central square and surrounding streets are where you'll be spending most of your time regardless of where you sleep — the best cafés, the Kapani market, Modiano market, and most of the Byzantine churches are within a 15-minute walk. Hotel options range from the grand Electra Hotel to well-priced three-stars around Tsimiski pedestrian street.
The preserved Ottoman-era neighborhood above the Byzantine walls, untouched by the 1917 fire that leveled most of Thessaloniki. Winding cobblestone alleys, wooden-balconied houses, and the best panoramic views of the city and gulf. A handful of small guesthouses and Airbnbs here are excellent value (€50–80/night) but require walking uphill — not ideal with heavy luggage.
A coastal suburb 4km east of center along the seafront promenade, heavily residential and favored by expats and young families. Seafood restaurants here are more local and less tourist-inflated than the waterfront spots downtown. Good base if you want a quieter neighborhood; take Bus #5 or #13 to the center in 20 minutes.
The redesigned 3.5km waterfront from the White Tower east toward the Concert Hall is where Thessaloniki's premium hotels cluster — the Met Hotel and Porto Palace are both here. Walking distance to nothing but the waterfront itself; you'll need taxis or the bus to reach the markets and historic sites inland. Worth it for the sunset views and jogging culture.
Events & Festivals
One of the oldest and most respected film festivals in Southeast Europe, running for 10 days in early-to-mid November. The Olympion Cinema on Aristotelous Square is the main venue, with screenings across the city at €5–8 per film. Hotel rates spike 20–30% during the festival but the energy is fantastic — filmmakers, critics, and film students from across Europe descend on the city, every bar turns into an industry party, and the programming is genuinely adventurous.
An 80-year-old trade exhibition that opens September with a speech from the Greek prime minister and dominates the city for 9 days. Not directly relevant to leisure tourists but it causes hotel prices to triple and availability to vanish — avoid arriving in the first two weeks of September without booking accommodation months ahead. The rest of the month is lovely.
The three-week Greek Orthodox carnival period before Lent, with the final weekend before Clean Monday being especially lively. Thessaloniki's celebration is more restrained than Patras but Aristotelous Square hosts costume parades and the ouzo flows freely. Clean Monday (the first day of Lent) is a public holiday where everyone flies kites and eats seafood meze — genuinely one of the most charming Greek traditions to witness.
Month-long cultural festival honoring Saint Demetrios, the city's patron saint, culminating on October 26 with a major Orthodox procession through the city center carrying the saint's relics from the Rotunda to the Agios Dimitrios Basilica. Free outdoor concerts, theater performances, and Byzantine music events fill the month. The October 26 procession itself is a genuine spectacle that most Western tourists have never encountered.
