Summer continues; prices and crowds remain high. The Munich Opera Festival (Opernfestspiele) runs through late July into August — last-minute standing room tickets can be had. Heatwaves are increasingly common and the city lacks AC, so book accommodations with fans at minimum. Head to the Ammersee or Starnberger See lakes for swimming day trips.

Where to Stay
The historic core around Marienplatz and Maximilianstrasse — beautiful to walk through but pricey to sleep in. Hotels here run €180-400+/night and restaurants cater heavily to tourists. Worth splurging for Mandarin Oriental or Hotel Bayerischer Hof if budget allows; otherwise stay elsewhere and visit on foot.
The traditional bohemian neighborhood north of the Englischer Garten, with good independent restaurants, wine bars, and a younger local feel. Leopoldstrasse is the main strip but the side streets are where you actually want to eat and drink. Hotels here run €90-160/night and you're a 10-minute walk from the park.
Museum quarter between the Hauptbahnhof and Schwabing — home to the Pinakothek museums, the university, and solid mid-range guesthouses. Great location for museum-heavy days; lots of affordable lunch spots catering to students. Budget €80-140/night for decent hotels.
South of the Altstadt, Munich's most interesting neighborhood: gay-friendly, artsy, full of independent coffee shops and natural wine bars. Müllerstrasse and Hans-Sachs-Strasse have the best bar density. Where younger Munich actually hangs out; hotels run €85-150/night and Airbnbs are plentiful.
East of the Isar river, one of Munich's most livable neighborhoods with a village-within-the-city feel. Cheaper eats, solid local bars, and a 15-minute walk to the Altstadt. The Wiener Platz area has a good Tuesday/Friday market. Budget hotels and hostels here run €35-90/night.
Dense hotel zone with the highest concentration of budget options in the city — hostels from €25-35/night, 3-star hotels from €65-100/night. Slightly grittier feel but perfectly safe and unbeatable transit access. Wombat's Hostel here is legitimately one of the best-run hostels in Europe.
Events & Festivals
Runs for 16-18 days starting the third Saturday of September and ending the first Sunday of October at the Theresienwiese fairground. This is genuinely one of the world's great parties — 6 million visitors, massive beer tents holding 6,000+ people each, traditional Bavarian bands, roasted ox, fairground rides. Book your tent reservations and hotel 6-12 months in advance; walking in without a reservation is possible but you'll stand outside, and prices triple citywide.
Munich's Christmas market on Marienplatz is one of Europe's most atmospheric, running from late November through December 24th. Glühwein (mulled wine) at €4 a cup, artisan stalls selling handmade ornaments and nativity figures, the Rathaus as a backdrop. It's crowded on weekends but genuinely magical on a quiet Tuesday evening with light snow falling.
Bavaria's version of Mardi Gras peaks the Thursday before Ash Wednesday (Weiberfastnacht) and runs through Shrove Tuesday. Munich's version is more subdued than Cologne's but still involves costume parades, masquerade balls, and the whole city in fancy dress. The Viktualienmarkt hosts a traditional dance of the market women on the Tuesday.
A massive summer arts and culture festival held at Olympiapark in late June/early July, with world music concerts, circus performances, organic food stalls, and a strong environmental ethos. It's where Munich goes to feel cosmopolitan; very different from the beer tent vibe. A second Tollwood runs the first three weeks of December as a more alternative Christmas market.
Often called 'Little Oktoberfest,' this two-week festival at Theresienwiese in late April/early May has the same beer tents and fairground rides but a fraction of the crowds and tourists. Locals actually prefer it; you can walk into tents without reservations, prices are normal, and you get the genuine experience without the chaos.
