Book your Central or Maido reservation before you book your flights — seriously. Tables open exactly 60 days in advance on their websites and are gone within hours. If you want to eat at either restaurant (and you should — Maido's Nikkei tasting menu is arguably more accessible and just as brilliant as Central at $120pp vs $230pp), this is non-negotiable trip planning step #1. Also: fly into Lima on the late-night red-eye from Miami or New York, arrive at 5-6am, store your bags at the airport left-luggage counter (S/15/bag), take an Uber to Miraflores, and eat breakfast at a bakery until your hotel room is ready at 2pm — you lose no travel day and often save $150+ vs booking an extra night.
Where to Stay
The main tourist hub sitting on Pacific cliffs with manicured parks, Larcomar mall built into the clifftop, and wall-to-wall restaurants. Safe to walk at night, ATMs everywhere, English widely spoken. Stay at the boutique JW Marriott or Hotel B Miraflores (~$120–200/night) if splurging, or Casa Andina Standard for a reliable mid-range at $70–90.
Lima's Bohemian art district one neighborhood south of Miraflores — colorful colonial houses, the famous Bridge of Sighs, craft breweries, and cevicherías alongside galleries and boutique hotels. More atmospheric and local-feeling than Miraflores. Base here if you care about food and nightlife over hotel amenities; the 3BR Hostal Gemina or La Paisana boutique hotel hit $60–100/night.
Lima's financial and diplomatic district with wide tree-lined boulevards, golf course, and the city's highest-end hotels including the Country Club Lima Hotel and Westin. Best for business travelers or those wanting pure luxury and maximum security — quieter at night than Miraflores with fewer restaurant options within walking distance. Rooms run $150–350+/night.
UNESCO World Heritage colonial core with the Plaza Mayor, Cathedral, and incredible 16th–18th century architecture. Don't stay here overnight — it empties after dark and pickpocketing is a real issue — but spend a half-day here on a guided tour or Metropolitano bus day trip. The Convento de San Francisco with its catacombs is the single must-see sight in Lima.
Immediately adjacent to Miraflores but decidedly local — this is where Lima's chefs shop at Mercado Surquillo #1 and where you find the best no-frills cevicherías and Peruvian lunch spots for S/25–40 ($6–10) that blow away tourist-facing equivalents. Not a place to wander at night, but a short Uber from Miraflores for daytime market and food exploration.
