Across the Vistula from Kazimierz, this former Nazi occupation district is gentrifying fast but still has the lowest accommodation prices closest to the center — think $40-70/night guesthouses. Schindler's Factory is technically here (on the Kazimierz-Podgórze border), and the Ghetto Heroes Square (Plac Bohaterów Getta) is a sobering but essential memorial. A 20-minute walk or 10-minute tram ride to the Old Town.

Running from late November through December 26th on Rynek Główny, this is consistently ranked among Europe's top Christmas markets — not for the generic mulled wine and sausage (though those are excellent) but for the traditional nativity scene competition (Szopki Krakowskie) where local artisans construct elaborate miniature baroque churches. Locals actually attend this, which separates it from purely tourist-facing markets in bigger cities.
Ten days of concerts, film, theater, and food centered in Kazimierz, usually in late June-early July. This is one of the largest Jewish culture festivals in the world and draws performers from Israel, the US, and across Europe. The free outdoor concert on Szeroka Street closing the festival typically draws 10,000+ people and is genuinely electric.
Ancient Slavic midsummer celebration held on the Vistula River banks on the Saturday nearest June 24th. Young women traditionally float flower wreaths on the river while crowds gather for live music, folk performances, and fireworks. Free to attend and far less touristy than equivalent festivals in Prague or Budapest.
