Many visitors base here instead of Cairns proper — it costs more but the vibe is dramatically more relaxed.
Industrial-adjacent southern suburbs with the region's most affordable hostels — places like Gilligan's Backpacker Hotel (which despite the name has private rooms) at AUD $140-180/night.
