The boats fill up fast during peak season and the 2pm departure is the one most people miss scrambling to buy tickets at the window after a delayed flight. Also: the 2-for-1 BZD peg means you should never exchange USD to BZD at the airport — just pay in USD everywhere at the direct 2:1 rate, or if you need local currency, find a Scotiabank ATM in the city where rates are fair.
Where to Stay
The safest and most tourist-friendly part of Belize City, clustered around the Baron Bliss Lighthouse on the northern peninsula. The Great House Inn, Villa Boscardi, and the Radisson Fort George Hotel (the nicest in the city center) are all here. The Chateau Caribbean restaurant on Marine Parade is the go-to for fresh snapper and lobster in a proper sit-down setting.
The commercial and cultural heart of Belize City, centered on the Swing Bridge and Albert Street market. Extremely lively but requires awareness — petty theft is common for tourists who wander aimlessly. The best street food in the country is here: fry jacks, stew chicken, and rice and beans from open-air stalls around the central market. Don't flash cameras or phones.
A quieter residential area north of the center where many of the better guesthouses and small hotels are located, including D's Guest House and La Casona del Puerto. Less touristy than Fort George, more manageable than Southside. Local restaurants on Newtown Barracks Road serve the best plate lunches in the city for under BZ$15.
The upscale residential neighborhood where the Princess Hotel and Casino is located — really the only 'luxury' accommodation in the city proper. Not much to walk to, so you'll need taxis everywhere, but it's quieter and the hotel pool is genuinely nice. Most travelers with a true luxury budget skip the city entirely and fly direct to Ambergris Caye.
Events & Festivals
Baron Bliss Day on March 9th honors Henry Edward Ernest Victor Bliss, a British nobleman who left his entire estate to Belize in 1926 despite never setting foot on land there (he lived on his yacht in the harbor). The holiday brings boat races in the harbor and a low-key local celebration — genuinely interesting if you happen to be there, not worth planning a trip around.
The official lobster season opens June 15th, and Caye Caulker (45 min from Belize City by water taxi) throws the biggest party — three days of lobster dishes, live punta rock and soca music, and extremely cheap lobster prices since every restaurant is competing for business. Flying into BZE specifically for this weekend in mid-June is absolutely worth it, and airfares are at their lowest of the year.
Belize gained independence from Britain on September 21, 1981, and the celebration is one of the most genuinely patriotic holidays in Central America — massive parades through Belize City, the national stadium fills up, and Belizeans from all over the country come home. September 10th (Battle of St. George's Caye Day) is the warm-up celebration the week before. Both are authentic local experiences that few foreign tourists see.
November 19th celebrates the arrival of the Garifuna people to the shores of Belize in 1832, and the epicenter is Dangriga (3 hours south by bus from Belize City). Costumed reenactments of the landing by canoe happen right on the beach, followed by days of drumming, punta dancing, and traditional Garifuna food including hudut (fish and coconut milk stew). Fly into BZE, take the bus or shuttle south — this is one of the most extraordinary cultural events in Central America and most Americans have never heard of it.
