Basically identical to July for heat and crowds, with the added wrinkle that Athens itself partially empties as Athenians escape to islands. Some neighborhood restaurants close for the month. Everything tourist-facing stays open. If you're coming in August, arrive with low expectations for 'authentic local Athens' and high expectations for beach day trips and nightlife that runs until sunrise.

Where to Stay
The geographic and tourist heart of Athens, walkable to the Acropolis, Agora, and the flea market. Noisy and lively around the clock — great for first-timers who want everything within walking distance. Stay at hotels like Hotel Grande Bretagne adjacent for splurge nights or mid-range boutiques like The Zillers for ~€120-180/night.
The local's answer to Monastiraki — quieter, more residential, directly south of the Acropolis with some of the best rooftop views in the city. You're a 10-minute walk from everything but away from the souvenir shops. Strong cafe scene, excellent small restaurants, and solid mid-range hotels and Airbnbs for €80-150/night.
Athens' upscale hill neighborhood near Lycabettus Hill — think designer boutiques, serious restaurants, embassies, and well-dressed Athenians. The Hotel St. George Lycabettus anchors the area. Good for travelers who want sophisticated dining and shopping with easy Metro access; expensive by Athens standards but still 40% cheaper than comparable Paris neighborhoods.
Former working-class district now packed with restaurants, bars, and live music venues. This is where you go for nightlife that starts at midnight — Greek rock, jazz, rembetika. Budget-friendly mezedes tavernas sit next to hipster cocktail bars. Airbnbs here are great value at €60-100/night and you'll feel like an actual Athenian.
Athens' anarchist neighborhood — covered in political graffiti, home to squats, alternative bookshops, and some of the city's best no-frills tavernas. Generally safe during daylight for curious travelers; approach with awareness at night. Hostels and budget guesthouses run €25-55/night. The National Archaeological Museum is right here.

Events & Festivals
The most important holiday in Greece and a genuinely spectacular experience for visitors — the midnight Anastasi (Resurrection) service involves thousands of people gathering at churches holding candles in the darkness before an explosion of light and fireworks. The following day features enormous family lamb roasts that neighborhoods set up in public squares. Book accommodations 3-6 months early if traveling during this period as prices spike hard.
Greece's premier arts festival runs June through August and includes ancient drama performances in the spectacular Odeon of Herodes Atticus at the foot of the Acropolis. Watching a performance of Sophocles or Euripides in a 2,000-year-old Roman theater with the Parthenon lit up behind the stage is legitimately one of the great travel experiences available anywhere. Tickets run €15-80 and sell out fast — book at greekfestival.gr months in advance.
Held annually in early November, this race follows the actual original marathon route from the town of Marathon to the Panathenaic Stadium in Athens — the same 26.2 miles run by Pheidippides in 490 BC. Even non-runners should position themselves at the finish line finish to watch runners complete a genuinely historic course. Spectating is free and the whole city gets festive.
The Greek version of Mardi Gras runs for three weeks before Lent and peaks on Tsiknopempti ('Smoky Thursday') when every taverna and family in Greece grills enormous quantities of meat in the streets. Athens neighborhoods fill with costume parades and the whole city smells like charcoal smoke. It's raucous, affordable, and a rare chance to see Athenians in full celebration mode without tourist crowds.
Athens' biggest electronic music festival runs over a long weekend in June at the Faliro Delta coastal park, 20 minutes from the city center. International and Greek DJs perform on multiple stages with the sea as backdrop — think a more intimate, less corporate version of major European festivals with tickets around €80-120 for the full weekend. Surprisingly good lineup for the price.
