How we know: Sources are listed at the end. Fare rules are quoted from the alliance's own page and the cited reference; the price ranges are that reference's general figures, not Wildly observations.
A round-the-world (RTW) trip can be bought two ways: as a single alliance ticket with its own rulebook, or as a chain of one-way fares. The alliance ticket buys simplicity, connection protection and generous stopovers; the chain buys flexibility and, on some routings, a lower price. Which is cheaper depends on how many long-haul segments you need and how much you will change your mind.
How alliance RTW tickets work
The general shape is common to all of them. Wikipedia's summary: itineraries must cross both the Atlantic and the Pacific exactly once, start and finish in the same country, travel in one overall direction, allow roughly 5–16 stops, and carry mileage limits of about 30,000–60,000 km; economy fares generally run US$2,500–6,000 and business class US$5,000–14,000 (Round-the-world ticket).
oneworld Explorer prices by the number of continents visited (three to six) rather than by distance, allows up to 16 flight segments, must be completed within 12 months (minimum 10 days), must run in a continuous direction east or west between its three zones (the Americas; Europe, Middle East and Africa; Asia and the South-West Pacific), must start and finish in the same city, and must cross both oceans; backtracking within a continent is generally allowed (oneworld Explorer). Because it is continent-based, it rewards itineraries with many flights inside a continent.
Star Alliance Round the World is mileage-based, with tiers by total distance, similar direction and ocean-crossing rules, and a large network that is especially strong in Asia and Africa. Check the alliance's own planner for current tiers and rules.
Both are booked through the alliance's online planner or a member airline, and both let you change dates on a segment for a fee or free while keeping the routing.
When the alliance ticket wins
- Many long-haul segments (five or more) across several continents.
- A premium cabin. Business-class RTW fares are often far below the sum of one-way business fares.
- Complex routings where a missed connection on separate tickets would be expensive.
- You want the structure: one booking, one set of rules, dates changeable.
When one-ways win
- Few long-hauls (three or four) with lots of ground travel in between.
- You want low-cost carriers for the regional hops; alliance tickets exclude them.
- Your route is not a clean circle or you want to backtrack.
- You are flexible on dates and can wait for fares. Long-haul one-ways bought in the typical booking windows, one at a time, can total less than an economy RTW on simple routings. Wikipedia notes the chain approach "can be more expensive" than an alliance booking (Round-the-world ticket); whether it is depends on your legs, so price both.
How to price the comparison
- Sketch the loop: home, four to eight stops, home, in one direction.
- Run it through the oneworld and Star Alliance planners and note the fare and taxes.
- Price each long-haul leg as a one-way on the route pages and metasearch, for example JFK to London, LAX to Sydney, SFO to Bangkok or Chicago to Delhi; add the regional hops on low-cost carriers.
- Add bag fees and the cost of one missed connection you would have to cover yourself.
- Compare. If the one-way chain is only marginally cheaper, the alliance ticket's protection is worth the difference.
When to book
Alliance RTW fares are relatively stable and are generally ticketed a few months ahead, with the first segment fixing the price; book when your first date is firm. One-way chains follow ordinary booking windows: watch each long-haul leg with a price alert and buy the peak-season legs earliest. Visa and entry rules for each stop should be checked before anything is ticketed; see the passport and visa guide.
FAQ
How much does a round-the-world ticket cost? The cited reference gives general ranges of about US$2,500–6,000 in economy and US$5,000–14,000 in business; your routing, season and taxes decide where you land.
Can I fly low-cost airlines on an RTW ticket? Not on alliance tickets; that is one reason a chain of one-ways can be cheaper on simple routes.
Can I change dates on an alliance RTW ticket? Yes, usually for a fee or free depending on the fare, as long as the routing stays the same.
