How we know: Sources are listed at the end. Airline and airport facts come from the cited airport pages, weather from Météo-France normals, booking windows from Google Flights' published data. Current fares are on the JFK to Paris route page, not quoted here.
New York to Paris is one of the most competitive long-haul routes in the world, which is good news: several carriers, two Paris airports, and a low-cost option keep fares honest for most of the year. Here is how to work it.
Who flies it
From JFK to Charles de Gaulle (CDG): Air France, Delta and American operate nonstop (Charles de Gaulle Airport). Air France and Delta are joint-venture partners, so their schedules and fares are coordinated; American is the competitor.
From Newark: Air France also flies Newark–CDG, and United serves Paris from its Newark hub. Newark is worth including in every New York–Paris search.
Paris Orly (ORY): French Bee, a low-cost long-haul carrier, flies Orly–Newark, and La Compagnie operates an all-business-class service on the same pair (Orly Airport). Orly is south of the city and about as convenient as CDG for central Paris. See our French Bee review.
Practical upshot: search "NYC" (all airports) to "PAR" (all airports) rather than JFK to CDG only.
Flight time and schedule
Eastbound overnight flights take roughly seven to seven and a half hours; westbound daytime returns about eight to eight and a half. Most departures leave New York between late afternoon and late evening and arrive the next morning.
Cheapest seasons, by demand and weather
Paris demand peaks from June to August and around the Christmas holidays. Météo-France's 1991–2020 normals show the pleasant window running from May (average high 20°C / 68°F) to September (21.5°C / 71°F), with July and August the warmest at about 26°C / 78°F; January and February are the coldest at around 8°C / 46°F highs (Climate of Paris). Rain is spread fairly evenly across the year (roughly 7–11 rainy days a month), so there is no "wet season" to avoid.
- Best value with good weather: late April–May and September–early October. Shoulder-season demand, comfortable temperatures.
- Cheapest, coldest: November (outside Thanksgiving week) and mid-January to early March. Museums, food and short lines; pack a coat.
- Most expensive: mid-June to August, the Christmas–New Year fortnight, and Fashion Week and major event dates.
When to book
Google Flights' published data puts US–Europe fares lowest around 94 days before departure, with the low range beginning 50 or more days out (Thrifty Traveler on Google Flights data). For summer travel, treat three months as the deadline; for shoulder and winter travel there is more slack. Flying Monday to Wednesday has been about 13% cheaper than weekend departures in the same data.
How to get the best fare on this route
- Search all New York airports and both Paris airports.
- Compare a nonstop with a one-stop via a European hub; connections are often materially cheaper.
- Check whether French Bee's base fare plus a bag beats a full-service fare for your dates.
- Anchor to today's price on the JFK to Paris page (also Newark to Paris and Boston to Paris if you can position), then set a price alert with a realistic target and flexible dates.
- Book when it fires; cheap buckets on this route are contested.
Arriving in Paris
From CDG, the RER B train reaches central Paris in about 35–45 minutes; from Orly, the Orlyval shuttle plus RER B or the Metro line 14 extension. Both airports have taxis at fixed fares to the city centre. If you are heading to the Riviera instead, JFK to Nice is a seasonal nonstop worth checking.
