Morocco packs Atlantic coast, high mountains, imperial cities and the edge of the Sahara into a country the size of California, and the seasons hit each of them differently. The broad rule is simple: spring (March–May) and autumn (late September–November) are the best all-round windows, when Marrakesh and Fes are warm rather than punishing, the desert is bearable and the Atlas passes are open. Summer is for the coast; winter is for the desert and, if you time it right, for skiing above Marrakesh.

Marrakesh weather by month

Climate normals for Marrakesh Menara Airport, 1991–2020:

| Month | Avg high | Avg low | Rain | |---|---|---|---| | January | 66°F (19°C) | 43°F (6°C) | 1.0 in | | February | 69°F (21°C) | 46°F (8°C) | 1.0 in | | March | 74°F (24°C) | 51°F (10°C) | 1.4 in | | April | 78°F (26°C) | 54°F (12°C) | 1.0 in | | May | 85°F (29°C) | 59°F (15°C) | 0.4 in | | June | 92°F (34°C) | 64°F (18°C) | 0.1 in | | July | 100°F (38°C) | 69°F (21°C) | 0.1 in | | August | 99°F (37°C) | 70°F (21°C) | 0.2 in | | September | 90°F (32°C) | 65°F (19°C) | 0.6 in | | October | 83°F (28°C) | 60°F (16°C) | 0.8 in | | November | 74°F (23°C) | 51°F (11°C) | 1.2 in | | December | 68°F (20°C) | 45°F (7°C) | 1.0 in |

July and August average around 100°F in the afternoon; the medina, with its narrow lanes and stone, holds the heat well into the evening. Winter days are mild and sunny but nights drop into the 40s, and riads, built for summer, can be genuinely cold. Rain is scarce in any month. Fes runs a few degrees cooler in winter and is wetter; Casablanca, Rabat and Essaouira on the Atlantic are cooler and more humid all year, with summer highs held down by ocean breezes.

Season by season

March–May (spring, the best all-rounder). Wikivoyage calls April the best time for the imperial cities, and the table agrees: highs in the 70s in Marrakesh, wildflowers in the Middle Atlas, snow still on the High Atlas peaks behind the city. Easter week brings a European visitor surge to Marrakesh.

June–August (summer, hot inland). Wikivoyage notes July and August are Morocco's peak tourist season, driven by European holidays and returning Moroccan expatriates, even though the interior is at its hottest. This is when to head for the coast: Essaouira in July is the guide's own recommendation, and Tangier, Asilah and Agadir are similarly pleasant. Desert trips in this window are for the committed only.

September–November (autumn). The heat breaks in late September and October is close to ideal everywhere: warm days in the cities, comfortable nights in the Sahara camps, and the Atlas at its most walkable. November is cooler and quieter, and one of the better-value months.

December–February (winter). Sunny, cool days and cold nights. Wikivoyage suggests February for desert trekking, and it is right: the dunes at Merzouga and Zagora are comfortable by day and cold but clear at night. Snow closes some High Atlas passes at times; Oukaïmeden, above Marrakesh, has a small ski area. Christmas and New Year bring a short European peak to Marrakesh.

Ramadan and Eid

Ramadan moves about 11 days earlier each year, so check the dates for your travel year. Wikivoyage's description is accurate: most restaurants outside tourist areas close for lunch, the pace of daily life slows, and at the end of the month Eid al-Fitr shuts "practically everything" for up to a week while transport fills with people heading home. Visiting during Ramadan is entirely doable and the evening iftar atmosphere is memorable, but do not schedule long overland travel over Eid.

Getting there from the US

Casablanca's Mohammed V (CMN) is the long-haul gateway. Its destinations table lists Royal Air Maroc nonstops from New York–JFK, Washington–Dulles, Miami and Los Angeles, with the Los Angeles route noted as a recent launch; no US carrier serves Casablanca nonstop. Marrakesh Menara (RAK) has seasonal nonstops on United from Newark and Delta from Atlanta, per its destinations table, and is otherwise reached through European hubs: Air France via Paris, British Airways via London, Iberia via Madrid, TAP via Lisbon, plus Qatar Airways via Doha.

For most itineraries the choice is between a Royal Air Maroc nonstop into Casablanca followed by the train (about 2.5 hours to Marrakesh, 3–4 to Fes) or a one-stop through Europe straight into Marrakesh. Flying time on the nonstop from JFK is roughly 7 hours eastbound. For today's prices see JFK to Casablanca, Washington Dulles to Casablanca, Newark to Marrakesh and Atlanta to Marrakesh.

When fares tend to be lowest

US–Morocco demand follows two calendars. The transatlantic summer peak (June–August) pushes fares up on both the nonstops and the European connections, and Christmas–New Year and Easter add shorter spikes. The seasonal US nonstops into Marrakesh typically run in the cooler months, which means more seats exactly when the weather is best. The quiet windows are mid-January to early March and November, with late spring and late September in between.

That is a demand-calendar argument, not a price forecast. Fares on any given route depend on capacity and competition, so pick your window, check the route page for what it is actually pricing today, and set a price alert with a target you would be happy to pay. Wildly checks the route daily and emails you when the fare drops.

Entry requirements for US citizens

US passport holders can enter Morocco visa-free for stays of up to 90 days (Wikivoyage, "Get in"); extensions are possible but described as slow. Your passport should be valid for the length of the stay, and you will complete an arrival form on the plane or at the border. Requirements change, so confirm with the Moroccan embassy before departure.

Where to go, by month

  • January–February: Sahara camps at Merzouga or Zagora; Marrakesh and Fes with few crowds; possible skiing at Oukaïmeden.
  • March–April: Imperial cities (Marrakesh, Fes, Meknes, Rabat) and the High Atlas foothills; almond blossom in the Ameln Valley early in the window.
  • May: Rose harvest around Kelaat M'Gouna in the Dades Valley; last comfortable month for Marrakesh before summer.
  • June–August: Essaouira, Tangier, Asilah and the Rif coast; Chefchaouen at altitude is tolerable.
  • September–October: Everywhere. Fes, the Draa Valley, the desert and the Atlas all work.
  • November–December: Cities, coast and desert; pack layers for cold nights.

FAQ

What is the best month to visit Morocco? October, then April. Both give warm days in the cities, a comfortable desert and open mountain roads, without July–August heat or the winter chill in unheated riads.

How hot is Marrakesh in summer? Normals put July highs at 100°F and August at 99°F. It is a dry heat, but the medina holds it, and sightseeing is limited to early morning and after sunset.

Should I avoid Ramadan? No, but plan around it: eat lunch in tourist restaurants or riads, expect a slower pace, and avoid travelling over Eid al-Fitr when transport is packed and businesses close for days (Wikivoyage).

Can I fly nonstop from the US? Yes. Royal Air Maroc flies nonstop to Casablanca from JFK, Washington–Dulles, Miami and Los Angeles, and United (Newark) and Delta (Atlanta) list seasonal nonstops to Marrakesh, per the airport destinations tables. Check dates for the seasonal services.

Do I need a visa? No, for tourist stays up to 90 days on a US passport (Wikivoyage).
