The Czech Republic is a four-season, inland destination, so the calculation is simpler than for a beach country: late April to early June and September to mid-October give you mild weather, long days and open countryside sights without the summer crowds on Charles Bridge. July and August are warm, busy and the most expensive months to fly to Europe generally. Winter is cold and grey but has the Advent markets, and January–February are the quietest months of the year in Prague.

Prague weather by month

1991–2020 climate normals for Prague (Clementinum station), published by the Czech Hydrometeorological Institute and reproduced on Wikipedia:

| Month | Avg high | Avg low | Precipitation | |---|---|---|---| | January | 39°F (3.9°C) | 31°F (−0.5°C) | 0.7 in | | February | 42°F (5.6°C) | 32°F (0.0°C) | 0.6 in | | March | 50°F (10.0°C) | 37°F (2.9°C) | 1.0 in | | April | 61°F (16.1°C) | 44°F (6.9°C) | 1.0 in | | May | 70°F (20.9°C) | 52°F (11.3°C) | 2.3 in | | June | 76°F (24.4°C) | 59°F (14.8°C) | 2.7 in | | July | 80°F (26.5°C) | 62°F (16.6°C) | 2.7 in | | August | 79°F (25.9°C) | 61°F (16.3°C) | 2.4 in | | September | 69°F (20.4°C) | 54°F (12.2°C) | 1.3 in | | October | 58°F (14.4°C) | 46°F (7.9°C) | 1.2 in | | November | 47°F (8.5°C) | 39°F (3.9°C) | 1.0 in | | December | 41°F (4.8°C) | 33°F (0.6°C) | 0.9 in |

Prague is a dry city by European standards: even the wettest months (May–August) average under three inches, and most of that falls as short summer showers. Winter is cold rather than wet, with highs around 40°F and frequent overcast. Note that the Clementinum is a city-centre station; the countryside and the Šumava and Krkonoše mountains run several degrees colder.

Season by season

January–March (winter). Cold, short days, the fewest visitors of the year and the best hotel availability. Prague's museums, concert halls and beer halls are the draw; many castles and rural sights outside the capital run reduced hours or close until April.

April–early June (spring). Highs climb from around 60°F to the mid-70s, beer gardens reopen, and Český Krumlov, Kutná Hora and the Moravian wine country are fully open before the summer crowds. The Prague Spring music festival runs from mid-May.

Mid-June–August (summer, peak). Warm to hot, the longest days, and the heaviest crowds in Prague's Old Town and at Prague Castle. This is also the transatlantic peak, so flights cost the most.

September–October (autumn). Highs in the 60s in September falling to the 50s in October, Moravian wine harvest, autumn colour in Bohemian Switzerland and the Bohemian Paradise. Crowds thin steadily after mid-September.

November–December (Advent). Grey and cold, but the Christmas markets on Old Town Square and Wenceslas Square open in late November and run into the New Year. The week between Christmas and New Year is a short, sharp peak for both flights and hotels.

Getting there from the US

Václav Havel Airport Prague (PRG) is the only Czech airport with intercontinental service. According to its Wikipedia airlines-and-destinations list, the US nonstops are seasonal: Delta from New York–JFK and American from Philadelphia. Outside those summer schedules, and from every other US city, you connect through a European hub (Frankfurt, Munich, Amsterdam, Paris, London, Zurich, Vienna, Warsaw or Lisbon are the common ones). Because Prague is only a short hop from several of those hubs, one-stop itineraries are often not much longer than a nonstop plus a connection would be.

For today's prices see JFK to Prague, Philadelphia to Prague, Chicago to Prague and LAX to Prague.

When fares tend to be lowest

Because most US–Prague journeys route through a major European hub, fares follow the general transatlantic calendar: highest from mid-June through August and over Christmas–New Year, softest from November through March excluding the holidays, with the spring and autumn shoulder months in between. The seasonal nonstops go on sale for the peak season, so they add convenience more than savings. The Europe shoulder season guide covers the timing in more depth.

Pick a target from the route page and set a price alert. Wildly checks the routes you track every day and emails you when the fare drops to your target.

Entry requirements for US citizens

The Czech Republic is a Schengen Area member, so US passport holders can visit visa-free for up to 90 days in any 180-day period, counted across all Schengen countries together (Wikivoyage, "Travelling around the Schengen Area"). Wikivoyage's Czech Republic page adds that non-EU passports must be valid for at least 90 days beyond your planned departure from the Schengen Area, and that stays over 30 days must be registered with the Foreign Police (hotels do this for you). The country uses the Czech koruna, not the euro. Confirm current rules with the Czech embassy before you fly.

Where to go, by month

  • April–June: Prague plus Český Krumlov, Kutná Hora and Karlštejn; hiking in Bohemian Switzerland from mid-April.
  • July–August: Get out of Prague: Olomouc, Telč, Třeboň and the Lednice–Valtice area are far quieter than the capital.
  • September–October: South Moravia (Mikulov, Znojmo) for the wine harvest; Šumava for autumn colour.
  • November–March: Prague-focused trips built around the Advent markets, concerts and museums; Brno and Olomouc have smaller, less-touristed Christmas markets.

FAQ

What is the cheapest month to fly to the Czech Republic? The winter months outside Christmas (January–March, November) are usually the softest for transatlantic fares, but they are also the coldest. For a balance of price and weather, aim for late April–May or late September–October and set an alert on your route.

How many days do you need? Four or five for Prague alone, seven or eight to add Český Krumlov and one more region (Kutná Hora, Moravia or the Bohemian countryside).

Are there nonstop flights from the US to Prague? Yes, but only seasonally: Delta from JFK and American from Philadelphia, per the airport's destinations list. Otherwise you connect in Europe.

Do US citizens need a visa for the Czech Republic? No. The Schengen 90-days-in-180 rule applies, and your passport should be valid at least 90 days beyond your planned departure.

When are the Prague Christmas markets? They open in late November and run through the New Year. Early December is quieter and cheaper than the week between Christmas and New Year.
