TAP Air Portugal is a full-service Star Alliance carrier that often prices like a budget one on its US routes, and it comes with the best stopover programme in Europe. It is the natural choice for Portugal and a credible cheap way into the rest of the continent, with some real trade-offs on aircraft and connections.
Routes
TAP flies to Lisbon from Newark, New York JFK, Boston and Miami among other US cities, and has grown its US schedule to around 30 weekly flights (TAP Air Portugal). Porto also has seasonal US service. From Lisbon, TAP connects across Europe, to Brazil and to Africa. Check current fares on Newark to Lisbon, JFK to Lisbon, Boston to Lisbon, Miami to Lisbon and Chicago to Lisbon.
The Portugal Stopover
TAP lets you add a stopover of up to 10 days in Lisbon or Porto on the outbound or return of a connecting itinerary at no additional airfare, plus a 25% discount on one domestic flight within Portugal during the stay and partner offers on the ground (TAP Portugal Stopover). During booking, an "Add a free Stopover" option appears when the itinerary qualifies. For a New York–Rome or Boston–Barcelona trip, that is a few days in Lisbon for the cost of a hotel.
Fare families
Economy is sold as tap|discount, tap|basic, tap|classic and tap|plus, with tap|executive for business class (TAP Air Portugal). The discount and basic tiers behave like basic economy: restricted changes and, on the lowest tier, no checked bag on some routes. Read the inclusions for the specific fare before comparing with another airline's basic economy; classic is usually the like-for-like comparison.
Aircraft
TAP's long-haul fleet is all Airbus: A330neos (TAP was the launch customer) and A321LRs, which it uses on thinner US routes (TAP Air Portugal). The A330neo is a modern wide-body with a good business-class cabin. The A321LR is a single-aisle jet on a seven-hour sector: efficient for the airline, less roomy for the passenger, and the business seats are angled recliners rather than fully flat on some aircraft. Check which type operates your flight if that matters to you.
Star Alliance
TAP joined Star Alliance in 2005 (TAP Air Portugal), so United MileagePlus members earn and redeem on TAP, elite benefits apply, and United connections from smaller US cities to TAP's gateways sit on one ticket with connection protection. TAP's own programme, Miles&Go, is less useful for US-based travellers than crediting to United.
Trade-offs
- Lisbon connections. Lisbon's airport is congested at peak; allow generous connection time, especially for non-Schengen-to-Schengen transfers.
- Irregular operations. TAP's on-time performance has been criticised; a stopover or an overnight before an important onward booking is prudent.
- Narrow-body long-haul. The A321LR is fine in economy for a night flight; it is not a wide-body.
- Fare rules. The cheapest tiers are strict. Price the tier you would actually accept.
When TAP wins
- Portugal is your destination, or you want a Lisbon or Porto stopover on the way to somewhere else.
- You are flying from the East Coast or Miami to southern Europe and TAP's connecting fare via Lisbon undercuts the nonstops.
- You fly United and want Star Alliance earning.
